That Eric Staal picture is fantastic. Downloaded for future use in a random text.

Great find

One thing I've been noticing on the business board lately is that whenever people list out the troubled southern markets for some reason or another, they list usually like Florida, Dallas, Columbus, Nashville, etc... but they never list us now.

Is this because we are THAT irrelevant or is it because people don't see us in that light anymore?

So a friend of mine who plays lower level pro hockey posted something on Facebook, the gist of it being if the NHLPA was so tight of a union, there wouldn't be players playing overseas at the drop of a hat. Interesting take, seeing as a huge number of guys wouldn't be the best fit over in the European leagues and wouldn't be wanted as a result. So the better/richer players can still make money, and the lesser/poorer players are out of luck. Like i said, thought it was an interesting take.

I think it's the latter. "Those people" always seem to have a handy short-list of relocation candidates, and the struggles in Columbus and Dallas bumped us out of the bottom bracket.

Also, to our credit, attendance has been decent and ownership has stabilized in the past few years. The All Star Game helped, the long playoff runs helped, and this summer's roster moves sent a signal that the organization has money to burn.

Well this SHOULD have been the last night without hockey until June. Now we're reduced to wondering if we'll have hockey before June

Melrose was making the same point last night.

As for them knocking the quality of the KHL hockey...well, it does suck! Guaranteed insomnia cure!

Saturday. Instead of watching the Canes play the Jets at 2, I'll be doing something else. That makes me sad.

If you're referring to Melrose knocking the quality of the game on air, it doesn't matter if it's true. He works for ESPN, ESPN's broadcasting hockey, you don't sit there and rag on the KHL for 2 and a half hours in the middle of the broadcast, especially sitting there comparing it to a league that ESPN DOESN'T have broadcasting rights to. It's just bad color commentating. The dude's a clown.

BTW, I skipped class to watch the game and ended up falling asleep after two periods. I agree with you, he's right, it's boring as hell. He just shouldn't be saying that...

It's ESPN and Melrose....so I'm not taking up for either one, nor am I defending them. I got the impression while "watching" ( I wasn't paying close attention to the snoozefest) that the commentators felt like they were not talking to much of an audience....but amongst themselves. And they might have been right.

Nah I wasn't paying much attention either, and you're probably right that we were the only two in the country watching the game (probably not TOO much of an exaggeration). Definitely expected a bit more from Levy though...

Guys, if we lose the whole season can we pretend we won the Cup at the end of our pretend fabricated season? That way when we list the Cup winners by year instead of putting a lockout for 2012-2013 we can just put us and piss some Canadians off? Thanks.

I applaud your idea sir. Anything I can do to help piss off Canadian hockey fans is well worth my time

Only three of those cities regularly get winter. Chicago is pretty mild even tho it does get snow. Last year the river didn't even freeze.

Clearly hockey is a sun belt sport. Discuss.

Also, I found this:

on the Rangers board. Thoughts?

They're right, Staal for Richards would be ripping us off. They'd have to add a ******** to do it even without the "face of the franchise" factor.

Humorous, even from their inaccurate perspective that Richards has more trade value. Didn't we just see them get Rick Nash for a bag of pucks?

Should read:

One does not simply

Trade Rick Nash for Dubinsky, Anisimov, and Erixon

Oh wait, they do?

Richards and 6 1st rounders for Staal

I'm not surprised at the owners' determination and never-surrender attitude. Aside from the jeopardized future of small market teams, an opportunity for improvement looms in the fate of a lockout. Let me explain:

1. In case of a lockout, a few small market teams along with some ****** Canadian teams have 3 balls to draw from for the 1st pick in the 2013 draft. Carolina being one of these teams, has a 6% chance to end up with this pick. They have a 42% chance at picking higher than they did from this past draft. The odds of us falling out of the top 10 is like not hitting tails once on 4 coin flips(Try it!!!).

2. There is no accrurate way to predict a teams chances of making the playoffs, so I integraded our collective standings predictions in a similar fashion to the lottery draft system. Each playoff team gets 2 balls, and nonplayoff teams such as the Devils, Sabres, and Stars only get one. There being exactly half the league with any shot at the cup, they deserve more balls. Canes have about a 4% chance of winning it all out of 48 balls.

The hurricanes could have a 2% higher chance to select Mackinnon and win multiple Stanley cups as opposed to just this years. They have a good shot at drafting high end talent from the top 10 in case theres a lockout. Call me optimistic, but I don't care about Bettman or no damn lockout.

This has my head spinning.
The teams with the balls get higher draft picks?
The teams with the balls will win the Stanley Cup multiple times?
The teams with only one ball are losers?
Are their any teams with no balls?

Everyone gets one ball (Oilers shouldn't IMO), but it's based on number of times a team has made the playoffs or had the #1 overall pick the last 3 seasons IIRC.
