According to A. Wardo, the NHLPA has tabled an offer.

Things are starting to sound positive. Someone on twitter said Fehr may make concessions, and we will see a 10 year (!) CBA.

Make. This. Happen.

NHL counters.

Dammit, tonight I'm supposed to be writing my term paper. Instead, I'm glued to the hockey forums.

Well, this is a bit exciting... Not as if Barnaby's a legit source though...

Sounds promising, but it could turn just as quickly.

I read somewhere that the Owners were relaxing some of their "contract" requests. If there are no changes to the length of time for which a player can become a UFA, then the Sutter, Dumoulin and an 8th overall for 65% a season of Jordan Staal will look like a pretty bad deal.

I also hope there is change so that NCAA players staying 4 years can't go UFA like Justin Schulz did even though I realize the biggest hurdles are the money in these negotiations.

Well, I got halfway through my calc 3 practice exam, then saw 30 or so new tweets on twitter since I last checked...and....

I'll get back to it eventually.

I'm not liking the grade breakdown for me on this final. 81 or lower, I get a B+ at best, 82-93 gets me an A-, or a 94+ gets me an A.

I want the A, obviously.

The practice final only has one triple integral on it, and that's just rewriting the bounds. There'll probably be one or two at most on the final.

Plus, I'm far more concerned about my Statics final. Since I'm terrible at reading comprehension and following instructions on the tests we've had (I looked back at them and facepalmed over several things), I need to do well on the final.

We signed Jordan to a 10 year contract.

Yes, but he's implying that we could have signed Jordan out of free agency as a UFA, keeping Sutter, Dumoulin, and the 1st.

Yes, but that contract was after the trade. The Canes had to give up those asset no matter what contract they signed Staal to. Since he really wanted to come here (since he turned down the exact same contract from Pittsburgh), in all likelihood the Canes also could have signed him after this season when he became a UFA. I realize it was no guarantee, he could have changed his mind, or another team could have offered him a deal he couldn't resist this off-season so Rutherford was going to make the trade because of that and offer a "fair" return to Pitts.

For me, even though I think Jordan really wanted to play with Eric and would have ended up here, I got my head around the trade for 3 reasons:

1) We got a full season out of Jordan this year (independent of the 10 year deal as he was still under contract in Pittsburgh for this season until the trade)
2) I was hoping the CBA would extend the time to UFA (not just because of this, because I think it helps small market teams). Then Jordan wouldn't have been a UFA after this season so the trade made more sense.
3) If he had a dominant year, some team could have offered him a huge sum as a UFA so we had to get him. In a shortened season with a new CBA, who knows how likely that is.

Anyhow, I guess no crying over spilled milk. Still glad we have Jordan.

If JStaal was still an RFA after this season, his trade value would be greater, no?

Our Calc III final was open book, open note, open internet.

Our professor walked into lecture laughing about three weeks before the final, we asked what was so funny, he said "I wrote your final last night." It was brutal...

Having Wolfram for all of the tough integrals was pretty nice though!

That's kind of my point. If he was, then I'd feel better about what we gave up.

From my perspective, the deal was a bit of a steep price to pay to get Staal for this year given he would have been a UFA in a year at the time the trade was made. But if the CBA does change and he would have remained an RFA for longer, then I think the deal the Canes made was more equitable as they couldn't just wait for him to get to UFA at the end of the year.

Don't get me wrong, I understand why Rutherford offered what he did because he didn't want to take the chance of losing out on him as a UFA, or that Jordan may change his mind, and it was unclear what the new CBA would bring...so this is all a bunch of hindsight what-ifs. In the end, what happens in the CBA is really irrelevant as the Canes gave up what they did and received Staal completely independent of the CBA. I would just personally feel a little better about the deal.

My original comment about it being a "pretty bad deal" if that happened was a poor choice of words and not a very good characterization of it. No matter what happens with the CBA, I don't think it was a bad deal at this point. Long term, how he plays going forward will define how good or bad the deal was.

Actually Barnaby's well connected, he did work for ESPN for a while as their only legit source not on loan from TSN.

The Rangers were the other team that was in the mix for J.Staal at the draft.

If Jordan were to have gone to UFA, do you really see us outbidding the Rangers? Not only do they also have a Staal brother, they also have infinitely more money and there's more to do in NY than meth.

And this all assumes that Jordan wouldn't have been traded to the Rangers to begin with.

Potentially. Personally, I think Jordan wanted to come and play with Eric. I obviously have no way of knowing this, so it is just speculation based on pre-trade rumors/reports/leaks and how quickly he signed his deal here. Anyhow, as I said, I understand why Rutherford gave up what he did and I suspect the threat of the Rangers and other teams were a part of his decision.
