Certainly no one we DRAFT is going to replace Aaron Asham or Steve Sullivan this year. Not unless we trade up or a really good F falls for some reason, then has a lights out camp (something Shero can't know anyway).

I think that's about 99% "we might have more roster players in a few days" and 1% "we might trade up and draft a stud F who doesn't need any time in the minors." In which case you could say he replaces Sullivan, then they sign Asham. Certainly no one who projects as a bottom 6 guy is filling Aaron Asham's shoes.
I think it's at least 50% "I'm gonna stir the pot and watch the reaction of internet nerds"

I think this year is going to be similar. Not with the top guys but overall I think there will be a lot of hit's & misses & not a lot of "meh" guys.

That quote could just mean he's focusing on the draft, and not his current roster. Then after the draft he'll figure out what to do with the team.

Reading the full Shero quote, it sounds more and more likely that the "one or two defensemen" he will likely move are from the group including Strait, Bortuzzo, and/or Lovejoy, rather than anyone from our regular top six.

Hearing ANA's Bobby Ryan is "available" again after being taken off trade market after Randy Carlyle's Duck departure.
We should pursue this if possible. We have the pieces.

He's the guy I'd trade Staal for.

I'd even over pay for it. Staal + BB, then again, maybe I just don't know enough about BB, BUT Ryan gives us a great lineup for the next three years. Both centers with elite wingers. Ryan could teach Tangradi a thing or two, as well.

If Ryan is truly available Shero would be crazy not to go after him. If we could get Ryan from ANA and Seto from MIN:

FORWARDS
Chris Kunitz ($3.725m) / Evgeni Malkin ($8.700m) / James Neal ($5.000m)
Devin Setoguchi ($3.000m) / Sidney Crosby ($8.700m) / Bobby Ryan ($5.100m)
Matt Cooke ($1.800m) / Jarret Stoll ($4.000m) / Pascal Dupuis ($1.500m)
Eric Tangradi ($0.726m) / Joe Vitale ($0.550m) / Craig Adams ($0.675m)
Dustin Jeffrey ($0.575m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Brooks Orpik ($3.750m) / Kris Letang ($3.500m)
Bryan Allen ($4.000m) / Zbynek Michalek ($4.000m)
Simon Despres ($0.840m) / Deryk Engelland ($0.567m)
Brian Strait ($0.605m) /
GOALTENDERS
Marc-Andre Fleury ($5.000m)
Tomas Vokoun ($2.000m)
------
CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $68,312,667; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $1,987,333

That lineup looks absurdly good.

Love the lineup. However the D need another PMD. Should Letang be out for any length of time, there's no one there other than Despres who can run the PP. I think Engo would be the odd man out in that case.

I'm saying Lovejoy and Martin.

So HA! Take that Zip!
Actually, yeah, they did say Martin was injured at the end there.

I'm sure there will be many who don't believe that he was (and for good reason), but they did at least use it as an excuse.

I stand corrected. I stayed away from the media because the loss was a bit painful being to the Flyers.

I feel like he was just as hurt as Johnson was when Theissen was up. But they did say he was hurt at the time.

I know where you're coming from, but I just don't think you can have 3 PMD and still make the defense tougher to play against. If you keep someone like Niskanen you would be paying him to play second line minutes and then you can't really afford to get a big bruising guy like Allen in the top 4. I think if any defensemen are out for a significant period you would see someone like Morrow being called up to get bottom pairing minutes and play on the PP.

I don't think we need a big bruising guy. I think Michalek would be better off having someone with him that can carry the puck reliably.

Shero also said the Suter decision could have an impact on the trades he makes. I don't know that Strait, Lovejoy or Bortuzzo would gain that much value after Suter is off the table.

Paul Martin sure as hell will.

If Bobby Ryan really is available, I hope Shero's kicking the tires on that. I'd do Staal for Ryan in a heartbeat.

Could you imagine our two-line deadliness with Crosby/Ryan on one line, followed up by Malkin/Neal on the other? That's, potentially speaking, four 40-goal guys. You can easily then just sprinkle in guys like Dupuis, Kunitz, or even Kennedy there, and you'd have two dominant lines.

Oh believe me, I was in the same boat. Your broader point still stands, of course.

I'm just torn on Martin. I wouldn't be devastated if they decided to hold onto him is all.

You could always pair Despres with Z and have someone like Allen with Engo.

I would just like us to pick up a bigger stay at home guy that can play in the top 4 regularly or even just if injuries necessitate it. Engo can hit, but you don't really want to be in a position where he is in the top 4.

I fully expect Despres to be on the second pairing with Michalek by the time playoffs roll around.

Karlsson just extended with Ottawa for 6.5M over 7 years. What does that do for Letang's next contract?
