I think they let him walk. He's got a couple of glaring weaknesses to his game. Face offs, physical game, scoring, play making. Decent penalty killer, not a bad defensive forward. But there is no real upside to his game right now. Can't afford to give him a roster spot with the amount of kids who could come.

I like Wandell, but he frustrates the hell out of me. Anyone else think he would do better in the Eastern Conference? Maybe a team like Peg or Tampa would trade for his rights.

I would say keep him while he remains cheap and use him as a 13th forward to start the season with promotion as appropriate.

There's worse guys to have on the depth chart than someone who knows how to skate and play defense. I don't see a spot on the team for him in the future, and as the youngsters in the AHL continue to improve and start earning some oppurtunities for advancement to the NHL than it's time for him to go.

Id like to re-sign him. Granted he has almost zero upside, at the same time for a fourth liner he has very little downside.

I like Wandell as well. Hope we don't let him go. Solid 4th liner.

Good- he is cheap and avoids rushing guys. He is better than Petersen and would be fine in the 13th forward role.

Stepneski ripping Heika a bit

With Eakin in, I just don't see where Wandell fits. But I guess we'll see.

@mikeheika Damn straight, because I need to know what the line combos are RIGHT NOW!... even if the roster isn't close to being complete.

@mikeheika Seriously, he's an asset. Why would you just let him walk?
Mark getting testy with his new job?

Wandell's a good guy to have stepping on to the 4th (or maybe even 3rd) lines if the injuries mount up.

Maybe he was qualified because a trade deal fell through or got delayed and they thought better to be safe than sorry? They certainly have the money to make that sort of decision.

I thought this same thing. It seems very logical to me that Joe is pursuing the trade market hard to find some quality players to bring in. I just think we don't have the assets to get those players. We have no positions of strength to deal from right now. All of our good prospects that we are hopeful to be impact players are just not proven yet. Since cash cannot be involved in trades, we have nothing. We have no chips that will bring back top 6 forwards. All we have is money and the UFA market looks tough this year.

Whatever Joe's plan is, you can bet Tom has heard it and I think bought into it or it wouldn't happen. I think Bob G. has heard the plan and also bought into it or he would have voiced his opinion, which I think carries a lot of weight. Whatever the plan is, I bet most of management is on board.

I believe Joe pushed really hard to get an extra 1st round pick as well but couldn't find any takers. I am excited that Joe is doing something. I hope he continues. I would rather him try and fail than do nothing at all and end up with 2 more years of mediocre finishes.

That's one more roster spot we know won't be improved. Playoffs, here we come.

Because making the playoffs hinges on Tom Wandell...

Also, all playoff teams have elite 4th lines. Obviously. Man, those other 4th liners are so good.

If only we could go back to the days of Krys Barch and Toby Petersen.

Making the playoffs hinges on making the roster better. Keeping Wandell around tells us his roster spot won't be better.

So your plan is to make the roster better by throwing away an asset?

A couple of years ago I was at a local park and saw a puppy running around. He was there all day including when I left.
As of today, he sits, stays, jumps, lies down, goes to his kennel when told and is housebroken. He's a good dog and I'm glad I kept him.

He's also better than Petersen.
