The thing about defenceman is, you can give the kids some sheltered minutes in the NHL, if you are getting solid minutes from your top 4. I truly believe, if we can improve Phaneuf's defence partner (and a better defencive system) we can trust any of our top 8-9 guys to take bottom pairing minutes. We have so many 3-4-5 defenceman, but we lack a true #1.

Wow lots of unwarranted hate for Liles, lol.

I thought the guy was real solid. After that hit he got a bit worse, but he was a large reason we were in contention for 3/4 of the season.

They never should have resigned him. He should have been dealt as a renatl at the deadline.

Why's that depressing? I think he's a good veteran to have on the team and he can bring some stability to our powerplay. Not to mention, before his concussion he was playing very well.

It's just the new schtick of the week. People are running out of things to complain about.

I would have dealt him myself, but I have no idea what he was worth then. He has a skill set that can't be matched by our current group, so until we sign Schultz, he's tough to replace.

IIRC he was concussed his last season in Colorado as well.

The way the Leafs are being run, there will never be enough time in a day to really complain about everything that needs to be complained about.

re: JML

i don't include him in my list because i think he's a bad player. i just wonder who these extra d might be. he could be moved if the leafs feel they can fill his role with younger players. moved also to clear cap space.

At the very least, that shows he's capable of regaining form following a concussion considering his steady play before his concussion this season :/

I don't even like Schenn, but until they are together we are going to hear the same thing.

So Schenn for JVR works for me.

We have quite a few puck-moving defensemen in the system.

Just like he did by signing hacks like Colby Armstrong and Tim Connolly, keeping John-Michael Liles just blocks the path of our kids developing. That would be acceptable if we were contending, but we're not even close to that.

I'd suggest anyone who needs to complain that often find a new team to cheer for.

Yeah giving a 4 year deal where his only value comes from producing offense and that's mostly from the powerplay. He also got that contract while he had a concussion and let's not assume that he will just bounce back. He's also a little bit on the older side and he will be 35/36 by the time his contract ends. Not to mention, this team has enough players that can't play defense. He was also playing on the 3rd pairing and we had more than enough money invested in defense anyways.

It was a good deal to bring him in because Gardiner was supposed to need some development time at the time but he blew the doors off so it made no sense to re-sign Liles.

Without Liles Leafs powerplay is non-existent.

Or he provides veteran leadership for the young PMDs when they make the jump to the NHL.

It's pretty sad for sure. I really think he came back from the concussion earlier than he wanted to.
