Harding or Backstrom

Backstrom makes $6M...Harding could be signed for $3-4.5M (hopefully $3.5)

In a weak UFA goalie market why not trade Backstrom to SJ, CHI, TOR, CLB etc for some good D??? What would be some trade options for Backstrom?

Isn't this obvious? Zidlicky.

Seriously speaking I find this trade a difficult one to make.

E: I don't think this needs a thread of its own. Would fit in 'Possible trade ideas'.

Because we need both of them for one more year.

I don't know where it should be, but Russo just reported that Harding is looking for a multi-year deal with the Wild. I'd give him a 2- or 3-year deal with an AAV between $1-1.5m.

if someone pays Harding $3.5m/yr I guess i can applaud them for their bravery. but a $3.5/3 years is a great deal. I'm guessing the most the Wild will be willing to spend is $4.5/3. Still, you'd think a multi-year with a NMC would signal the end of Backstrom here even under a good contract. Sometime we have to cut the cord but counting on Harding as a number one scares me. Now if he doesn't have a NMC...we could probably just dish him off somewhere if we come to a equitable arrangement with Backstrom.

Don't think of him as a starter, think of him as a transition goalie. He will split the load with Backstrom this year, then split with Hackett the next couple years until he's ready to take over as the starter.

Ya, I'd be concerned if the Wild re-signed Harding and moved Backstrom. No real need and if the goal is to make it to the playoffs, you're now weaker in net.

Like Jarick eluded to, if Harding is willing to sign on to be a bridge from Backstrom to another goaltender down the line; by all means sign him. Coming to an agreement on a contract with Harding with that sort of philosophy may be a bit tricky, though. Even if Josh would like to stay with this organization.

yeah i get that, but he explicitly said he wants to be the #1. You'd hope he'd be realistic about the situation and realize he will have to compete for the job post-backstrom but he's been waiting a while. Might be becoming a little impatient. I would think he'd be in the same situation almost anywhere that would sign him though--competing for the #1 job, not having it handed to him--so he might as well sign here all other things being equal.

Backstrom for P. Sharp

We've been looking at him for long enough, time to pull the trigger.

Every goalie wants to be a #1. Especially at his age. Maybe a 35-year-old journeyman might say "oh I'm just here to be a good teammate and step in when needed", but at his age, I hope he says he wants to be a #1!

The good thing with Hards is, you know he has no personality or ego issues. He's been a great trooper for years and years. And there's no question about his abilities in net. Only health. He's been pretty damn good nearly every time he starts.

If Hards signs here for say 3 years, he might be a starter this year, depending on what happens with Backstrom. He'll probably be a starter next year, and possibly the year after that.

It's kind of unfortunate for Backstrom he was here for the last several years. He was in his prime and is the exact type of goalie you want in the playoffs, but he never got there. Now his health is slipping and there are always good young goalies coming up. But he got his money.

He got his money and plenty of it. It'd be nice to see Harding on a 2-3 year deal. Very nice. It'd let the younger goalies develop properly, provided he still isn't getting hurt.

That would be really great but we would have to add atleast one good player.

Harding looking for Multi yr deal with Wild

Quote:
It appears Wild goaltender Josh Hading would rather stay in Minnesota long-term than sign elsewhere as a free agent.

According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Harding is looking for a multi-year contract before he becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Perfect.

I think we need Harding back to make the AHL-NHL transition easier for Hackett. Question is, do we re-sign Backstrom for a short-term contract next year when he's 35?

Backstrom has more experience; it would be nice having him around to give pointers to Hackett.

I say give Harding 2-3 years, and give Backstrom 2 years. Unless Backstrom would accept 1, then do that.

Harding is such a loyal team player...get it done Fletch! We know Backstrom is gone after this season, so we can roll with Hards and Hackett in 2013!
