This, For the Sens sake, (and really I don't care), but they better hope 7 years, for 5-5.5 at most. Even then it could be a lot if he doesn't continue his awesome play.

If it's less than 7 million we got a steal, plain and simple.

This is potentially a 70 million cap year a 7 million dollar player is equivalent to a 5 million dollar player at the beginning of the lockout.

That's moronic. You're saying Karlsson doesn't deserve more than James ****ing Wisniewski

It's not a cost. It is our privilege to pay Karlsson.

I love the people here all pumped for this signing. I'm pretty sure there was never going to be an issue about getting it done. I guess having it done before July 1st and seeing the term will be interesting though.

I'm trying to be a wishful thinker for Ottawa. Karlsson is a great young D, but he's not worth anywhere near 7 mil over 7 years just yet. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is his first "real money" contract right? I can understand wanting to lock him up long term, but that should mean that his salary for the next few years would be in the 5 million range and escalate the years following that giving an average of ~6m.

(Ps: to Sather/Gainey/Gauthier's credit, Gomez was one of the best centers on the market at the time...completely different situation.)

I'm thinking 7 years 49 million

My hope is that Karlsson likes Ottawa, and took a discount.

After the season he just had, it would be quite easy for his agent to point to Drew Doughty and basically show how he absolutely destroyed him this season.

After what Drew Doughty got, he was always going to be a comparable that Karlsson's agent could point to.

Both has a Norris nomination (and Karlsson still has a chance to win his). Frankly, anything under Doughty money is awesome and something to celebrate.

Check out Doughty's or Myers' contract. When you lead all defensemen by 20 points, you have done something special.. but I don't expect Habs' fans to give EK enough credit though. Majority of their board still thinks Subban > Karlsson which is mind-boggling for me.

I don't see any way that he doesn't sign for 6.5 per. Pulling a Crosby and signing for his jersey number

I don't want to start a war or anything...but Karlsson has only had 1 great year so far...Remember Mike Green?

Karlsson won't reach an average of 7m per year cap hit...and if he does it's an overpayment and reeks of desperation (read: Gomez).

I can almost assure you (as Bobby Mac alluded to) it will be in the 6m range, which is MUCH MORE than fair for a young kid getting his first real NHL contract. You'd better hope he lives up to this year and doesn't pull a Del Zotto/Green/Johnson/etc.

Not trying to bash Habs/Leafs, but for a comparison, when Leafs signed Komisarek, he was coming off a pretty good start to his career.

He got 5mil in a 60mil cap era right? Looking to clarify this.
So 6-7mil is not outlandish to expect for Karlsson.
No one expected Komi to bust, and similarly no one is expecting Karlsson to bust either.

Karlsson is the best D in the NHL. IMO he is worth more than 10 million per. We only get him at around 7m because he is still RFA.

Wow, that didn't take long on the Karlsson contract. 7 years, annual cap hit of $6.5M.
