Sens re-sign Erik Karlsson (7 years, $6.5M cap hit)
Not stuck in 2005. He's nowhere near a #1 defenseman. He may score a ton but as a dman your job is to defend and he doesn't know how to. One season isn't indicative of how he will progress.
From the fanbase that has Hamilton as the next Chara without him playing a pro game but karlsson who tore the league apart has questionable progression?
I agree with you in principle and I personally think the deal was a little much from my perspective as even a guy like Green isn't a PPG anymore. Still, that doesn't mean Karlsson didn't play like a #1 D-man this year. He did, he's MORE than a #1.
Karlsson is underrated defensively, as people mistake MacLean encouraging him to pinch with poor defensive play, but at the same time he isn't strong enough to be anywhere near the best defenceman.
the best defenseman in terms of what his overall game brings, not his defensive play, his puck movement and quick decision making is so key, along with his skating
Be objective? Honestly? Claiming that Erik Karlsson is a #1 D-man right now is not being objective?
I'm not wearing goggles, but you apparently are wearing a burlap sac over your head.
He's not that's the point. Sens fans refuse to look at the big picture with him. No one is denying his talent but he is nowhere near a #1 dman and shouldn't be paid as such. In a few years after a steady body of work then maybe but this kind of deal after one season is absurd.

One nomination doesn't make you a #1 sorry. By your logic, Mike Green is a #1.
This is how I know you don't watch Erik Karlsson play, and I'm sure you may have seen about one game's worth of ice-time from him. His logic makes a hell of a lot more sense than your logic, which is... I'm still waiting to hear your case for why Karlsson isn't a #1 D-man?
- Obliterated the rest of the league in points by a D-man.
- First D-man since Brian Leetch to have such a distance between him and the 2nd placed scoring D-man.
- An under-rated postional defensive game, with great stick checking.
- He's 21.
- He's been in the ASG.
- He's nominated for a Norris, again, at 21.
- It's been 2.5 seasons now of great hockey, with 1.0 season of OUTSTANDING hockey.
Before his injuries at the prime of his game, yes.
I'm pretty sure being one of the 3 best defensemen in the NHL is grounds to be a #1 defenseman on an NHL team.
Ahhh... haha. That is if you actually believe Trophies are 100% accurate. Karlsson is very elite offensively, but he is not a true #1 all around defenseman yet by any stretch of the imagination. And I like the kid.... long contract, good insurance against a setback or injury, and still a good salary if he does develop into a full #1 defenseman.

Why the hell do you care anyway? You are not a Sens fan, I can guarantee you that 99.99999% of sens fans are ecstatic to have Karlsson signed long term. So please to cheer for the Bruins and stop being an ass.

What is your case?
True #1 dmen (Doughty, Chara, Lidstrom, Weber)
- Special teams play of more than 1 minute per game
-True shut down play
- 3+ Norris Nominations
- 1+ Norris Winner
- 3+ ASG appearances
- More than 3 years of consistent play that is top 10 league wide in all categories.

Last I checked I was on the main boards and can discuss what I want.
I don't know why everyone is upset this is a wonderful move by the sens securing their future franchise defensemen long term. He may have had an outstanding year this year and he can regress and still be great.

Are you saying that out of 30 teams, only a select few have the benefit of having a #1 defenseman?
Come on. Karlsson is most definitely a #1 guy. I think the term is too long for such a young defenseman, but the price isn't unheard of, and it could end up being close to a steal if he keeps improving.

So, there are 4 #1 D-men in the whole league, huh? And one of them just retired? Righttttt.

So say a defenseman scores 150 goals, 300 points but is average defensively...I guess he is not a #1 ALL around d-man? Who really cares at a certain point. The guy is MORE than fine defensively.
I mean, from my own team, I think Gorges is a stud defensively, and significantly better than karlsson in that regard(because it's his main focus, not cuz karlsson cant play d or block shots). I take Karlsson every day of the week.
I mean, people like to talk about Karlsson not being physically imposing like Chara, or as defensively aware. Sure...but when you happen to move the puck up the ice like he does and have that type of offensive awareness and puck control, it no longer matters. Unless you want him to play defense in the offensive zone?
