More immediately important is Yzerman believes his goaltending search for the summer is done. The way Yzerman sees it, Lindback and returning Mathieu Garon will make a solid combination next season, regardless of who emerges as the No. 1. Yzerman also added depth by signing Riku Helenius from the Finish elite league.
Yzerman's goal is to build a long-term, perennial contender, while keeping the team "as competitive as possible" now. The fans are aware of it. He's not making moves to win the Cup this year.
We were in the playoff hunt until almost the end this past season with lousy goaltending, poor defense and a team riddled with injuries. Even a slight improvement in goal could have us in next year, and I doubt that Garon/Lindback could possibly be as bad as what we had last year.
We'll see if Lindback has a breakout season and reaches his potential. But Garon... common, he's failed to be consistent despite 10,000 chances.
Garon is literally the perfect backup in the NHL. I mean perfect for the position. I dont know what else you want him to do. The job is Lindbacks to lose basically. And if he does, There is Garon and more importantly Helenius who could easily be very good as well.
This trade is horrible for the Lightning BEFORE they traded for Lindback. Bob isnt worth half of that. And now after the trade its borderline retarded.
Philly has high end fowards, lacking defensive depth and questionable goaltending. Tampa has high end fowards, lacking defensive depth and questionable goaltending. I see no realistic trades to be made.
Heck, I'd take Garon over Bobrovsky.....mainly as a backup because I just don't see Bobs as ever being a #1. With a solid D in front of him, Garon can be superb.
If the premise of your assessment on Bob is that he will always be the goalie he is now, then I would take Garon too. If you're willing to look at raw talent and upside/room and ability to improve, then I think Bob is the goalie you take with out question if you're building for the future.
The issue I think is that Lindback is the goalie Yzerman is rolling the dice with looking for upside, and Garon is the guy he has as a known quantity/insurance policy. Lindback is probably closer to being a polished starter than Bob too. If they were looking to go all upside with out concern for this season, then I could see them getting Bob and Lindback, but that's probably bad business.
