Whatever happened to Denis Grebeshkov?

The guy had so much promise, put up 84 points in over 227 games. Why didn't it work out in the NHL for him?

He got a more lucrative offer to go to Russia. Grebeshkov wanted to stay in the NHL, but he would have had to take a paycut.

Quote:
After four weeks as a free agent, Grebeshkov agreed to a two-year contract with SKA St. Petersburg of the Continental Hockey League [KHL]on Wednesday, signing for slightly more than the $3.15-million (all currency U.S.) a season he made in the NHL last year.

He and his agent, Todd Diamond, fielded several offers from NHL teams, but all were between 30 and 40 per cent lower than his 2009-10 salary.

"We just weren't prepared to throw away the prime of his earning power, at 27 and 28 years old," Diamond said. "Denis really wanted to play in the NHL, but we couldn't do it at a huge discount."
Would be surprised if the NHL market for his services has changed substantially. He probably could land an NHL contract if he wants, but it'll be at a discount.

One of the worst puck handlers/decision makers I have ever seen in the NHL.

Always felt he was on the verge of something special in the NHL, then he would make some horrendous giveaway costing his team a goal.

One of the best players at making a pass from his own end to send a player on a breakaway.

Russia paid him more than he's worth.

Grebeshkov was bipolar. He was one of the worst Dmen I've ever seen when he first joined the Oilers. I think it was nerves. He was over thinking things and would make giveaways so bad that it was almost impressive. Then he decided to just keep it simple and he was very good. His breakout pass is top 20 in the NHL when he's keeping it simple. He can thread the needle.

He's better off in Russia though. He once said that he'd rather win the World Championships than a Stanley Cup. His NHL needs to have a short season for that to happen so...

Well put.

He looked brilliant in 2008-2009, though. 39 points (in 72 games) and a +12 on a pretty lousy and unremarkable Oilers team. Looked very smooth and polished that season; I thought he would be a guy that played 10 years as a top four in the NHL.

The next year, though, he fell completely apart and on one of the least interested, least competitive teams I've ever seen he was one of the worst culprits.

He just completed a really bad year with SKA. 0 goals, 8 assists in 46 games.

Garbagekov?

Good riddance.

I was tired of complaining about him every time he had the puck.
And people wonder how we got Taylor Hall.

I was getting ready to say we might see him again in his later years, when he would expect to make less money, but then I saw this:

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but Grebeshkov was traded this season from SKA to Yugra (Khanty-Mansiysk) for this 17 year old prospect.
