Ethan Moreau Retires

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=398809

To become a scout...

Quote:
The Montreal Canadiens announced Wednesday that the club has hired former Habs defenceman Donald Dufresne as assistant coach and Vincent Riendeau as goaltending consultant with the Montreal Canadiens AHL affiliate team in Hamilton. The team also confirmed the hiring of Ethan Moreau as part time professional scout for the NHL's Western Conference.

He'll get trashed for his last couple of years, and it's not exactly far off base, but Chopper was an amazing presence in our community for many years. Truly a hell of a good man off the ice.

A salute to a great guy and one-time captain of our club through its darkest days.

This thread makes me want Taylor Hall as a captain, since the last great captain for the Oilers was Jason Smith.

Good 3rd line player, but I think the captaincy role went to his head.

Wasn't really a fan of him especially the last few years, but I always thought he'd be in the game after he retired. Scouting is a good job for a recently retired player as he probably is home more often than not. I someday see him in some sort of player personnel role. Seems like a decent motivator and a guy that understands when you are drafted as a first rounder that you might have to learn different skills to stick around.

I can see the headlines: Moreau out for 6 months after dislocating his shoulder while signing his new contract as a pro scout.

JOKES!

Good luck Ethan.

One of the most charitable Oilers in the history of the organization. He was extremely well regarded for his community efforts and known to be quite humble.

Have you met the man, or is this just a hunch?

Did he retire with a Stanley Cup? I know at one point he was on the Kings roster but I don't think he played a game in the playoffs. Was he a healthy scratch? Injured? Or off the Roster?

Ethan Moreau was a pretty awesome player for us for 8-9 years. It wasn't until he lost a season that he fell off, and I hope they remember the dude who was team MVP in 2003/2004, and not what he was in his last few years.

You have to play half the season with the club to get your name engraved on the Cup and get a ring. Moreau played 28 games.

They can apply for an exception if they want, but haven't.

A scout? Head scratcher, that. I honestly thought he'd get work as an accountant after his brilliant manouvering of numbers on the teams restaurant bill a few years ago.

Any ex-player can be a scout, question is how good they do.

Not my favorite player by any means, but i promised that i would post this after coming back from my vacation. BTW if anyone ever gets the chance to go to Sylvan Lake in July, make sure to bring some AC!!!

This from a co-worker who follows the boards from time to time but not have an account:

Oiler fans, don’t turn into ‘nucks or flames fans with short memories. Moreau was a leader here for years, well before his captaincy. He was a leader on and off the ice for years and deserves the credit for the majority of his career work. Cut him a little slack for the later years. We all lose a bit of effectiveness in the home stretch. Read the story below and when you get to the point about Disneyland, remember this conversation between Hailey’s dad and Ethan. Hailey’s dad said thank you, but we can afford to buy our own tickets; Ethan replied “I am pretty sure I can afford them too, and in a time like this you don’t need to”. It was because of Moreau’s actions towards my wife’s little cousin and her last wish that made me want to name my first Son Ethan. PS Hailey was buried wearing her jersey from big George, another short term memory whipping boy of Oiler fans. Remember true fans are loyal to a fault. Thanks for listening.

I loved this guys game when he knew his role and MacT wasn't playing favorites, We had the best checking line in hockey behind the wings McCarty,Draper,Maltby line at one point. Moreau, Marchant and Grier were one of my fav bottom six lines in team history. This guy played his heart out for the Oil.... Thanks Ethan and Good luck!

His legacy for me will be the god awful job he did as a captain of a terrible team, failing to take any accountability and leaving kids out to dry with arrogance and indifference. Hopefully the memories of watching him take a stupid penalty seemingly every single game at the worst possible point will one day fade. A player who will leave no lasting memories. CaTCHa later, won't miss you or think of you a bit in the future.

It would be a great blemish to put a guy like this on the cup. It isn't like he was a long-time member of the team who missed out cause he was hurt. He missed out because he was a bum sent to the minors.

True, Moreau was front and center for just about every charity that requested an Oiler's time. Perhaps Bergeron47 meant in the locker room, in which case he certainly has a point.

Anyways, as Booya42 points out: Remember the good times.

Guy was a warrior for this team for a lot of years. And as evident by the story shared in this thread a player who cared about the city and gave generously of his time.

I'll choose to remember the positives over the decaying wreck of a team that he captained and which had many issues about it, beginning with limited talent. Time to move on.

To state the obvious, injuries cut short a battler's career.

For a time he was a heart and soul guy for the Oil. That's what I will focus on.
