-- Cody Almond has signed through 2015 in Geneva with Servette of the Swiss League. The Wild brass was miffed. He's never been on waivers and they think if he didn't make the team this fall, as a 22-year-old, 6-3 center, he would have been claimed by another NHL team. Hopefully it works out for Almond. Good kid.
I'm curious as to the reason the Wild brass are miffed. Spurned because he broke up with them before they had a chance to start the conversation with "Look Cody it's not you it's us..." It sounds more like with the upcoming depth of forwards coming up the pipeline he felt uncertain of his future with the Wild. He doesn't make the roster out of camp? Pfft no big deal he'll get claimed on waivers. We know people just love not having control over their destiny. This sounds more to me like Cody said I drive the bus in my life and I'm going to take control. Good for him. I hope he does well over there and maybe see him in the NHL in a few years. If not, playing hockey in one of the most beautiful parts of the world in your 20's. Not a bad gig. More power to him.
i completely missed the "miffed" part earlier, so this thread worked for me. They thinking they could have shoveled him off on someone for something with him signed at minimum?

do the wild still down his rights or is he a ufa now?
I believe they can still offer him a QO which he's obviously unable to sign (as he's now under contract in Europe). That would retain his rights until next year. I am not sure what his status would be come July 1, 2013 though.

The way I read the CBA, if they don't extend him an offer, he becomes a UFA. If they extend him one and he chooses not to sign it (or can't sign it), they still own his rights. After July 1, 2013 may depend on the new CBA...
I'd expect the new CBA would close up this loop hole of players being able to run away to Europe or the KHL to wait out their rookie and RFA periods and then come back to the NHL to cash in...
