Every pick ever made in draft history has been made, not because the GM wanted that player in his organization, but because he wanted to spite every other GM in the league who wanted that player. Fact.

"We don't like this player but because we think you do, we'll pass up on another guy whom we do like and take the guy you want (who, as previously stated, we don't really like)."

/ridiculous thread

Heard a viscous rumor the Pens drafted Crosby to spite the Ducks. Don't know what they had against them at the time though.

Thought I read something that LA drafted Brayden Schenn to tick off Brian Burke. It was probably a tongue-in-cheek comment though.

I could see it happening in the 6th or 7th round once every decade

while the idea is kinda silly a funny example for me (as an oilers fan) was when the oilers drafted jarrett stoll. he was originally drafted by the flames and he didnt sign and went back into the draft. the oilers took him and signed him right away. enough to melt an oilers fans heart.

Same thing happened to Matthew Lombardi. Oilers took him, he went back into the draft, Flames drafted him.

It appeared that way after Brian Burke had a chat with Bryan Murray about the seventh overall pick, and it seemed Murray was interested in taking Nazem Kadri at ninth. Burke went to the podium and selected Kadri, now Cowen was obviously on the Sens radar and they were happy with him, but it looked an awful lot like Burke's decision was final based on the Senators interest on Kadri.

If the Devils pick Matteau it'd be nice to hear the Matteau chants from the MSG crowd put to good use

Last draft there were rumors the Leafs were really high on Matt Puempel.

Murray heard this, trades two 2nd's and gets a first right before Burke's pick. Drafts Puempel.

Not sure if it counts but the day the Leafs drafted Kadri Burke went to Murray and said something like "Is this who you want ? Because this is who we are picking".

It was caught on camera and i thought it was pretty funny , especially with the tone Burke said it.

Edit : Ah look like someone beat me to it

Honestly, I think the Senators were not interested in Kadri, but Burke tipped his hand right of the bat so Murray was more than happy to walk away. Murray's hesitation before saying "yeah" was classic.

I don't think it was to 'spite' Toronto, though. It was likely that Ottawa wanted him and knew Toronto would take him if they had the chance, so used the opportunity to get the guy they wanted. However, I don't really believe that Burke wanted him over Biggs. Toronto desperately needs a player like Biggs.

EDIT: Noesen was selected before Biggs, not Puempel.

not to spite other team but when Howsen moved from EDM to CBJ ..he traded up just before EDM's 4th round pick and drafted M.Mayorov.. someone he knew Oilers were high on..

EDM ended up getting Omark instead.

If anything i think the Sens are probably better off with Cowen than with Kadri so in a sense Burke did them a favor.

Murray wanted to trade up, Burke was not willing to do so if Ottawa was going to draft Kadri. If Ottawa had wanted Cowen at 7, I doubt the negotiations would have got down to the wire like that.

Murray has pretty specifically stated that when trading up he never says who he actually wants, since we're a good drafting team and some teams might take cues from them. He said Garth Snow tried that move on him and he refused, even though it meant not trading up. With that fact come to light I do in fact think Murray had Cowen above Kadri. A Sens board insider has confirmed as much.

True. He also didn't trade up to 25 to get Percy until after Puempel was off the board already.

Sens drafting Mathieu Chouinard for the 2nd time after he refused to sign and re-entered the draft.

Not really to spite another GM, but it was out of spite.

Look at Snow's reaction after announcing the pick. I think there was something there

If they draft Matteau I hope they bury him in the minors to make up for his father's past transgressions.

Elaborate. You think he wanted Ryan Ellis who went 11th overall?

I was at that draft and IIRC, the Isles deal to move up to 12th overall was announced a few picks before, so it's definitely possible.

EDIT: Should have watched the video, clearly it happened as #12 was on the board...

Toronto does seem to be involved in these potential incidents. More of it could happen high up in the draft.

Edmonton wants Murray, but if Columbus doesn't pay up for the #1 spot, Edmonton will take Yakupov.
Or Edmonton may trade with Montreal, just ahead of my team (the Isles) so they can take Murray.
Or if the Isles take Galchenyuk or Grigorenko with Murray available, then Toronto will know they needed to trade up if they really wanted a big skilled center instead of a top defenseman or winger.

I see a lot of possibilities of gamesmanship in the top 5 this year.
