Ruutu is awesome but his cap hit isn't!

that's a huge risk to wait and find out. If Shero let's Staal walk for nothing and we don't win next year, Shero may very well be walking out right behind Staal at the end of next season.

I think we should still have some leverage with Carolina. They have to be somewhat concerned, if they don't offer us something decent, that Staal will be traded to another team with plenty of Cap space. I'm not sure to what degree Staal want's to play for the Canes. But if he spends a year on a team where he gets to be the star and bonds with his teamates as the leader of that team, he might be much less likely to leave, especially if that team is offering him big money to stay. The Canes best chance of getting him there and locking him up for the long term , at a reasonable amount, would seem to hinge on getting him directly from the Pens. IMO

This rumor sucks, if true. There's really not a whole lot I'd want from Carolina, except for Skinner, and that's absolutely out of the question now.

How could his role realistically change?

People need to chill out. The guy is getting
married tomorrow, do you really expect him to negotiate a contract right now?

I like Sutter. Ruutu is good but overpayed. The 8th overall is solid but doesn't help us this year. I don't know who Murphy is There's always Jussi

@RobRossi_Trib

Source close to talks tells @TribSports that Staal has not ruled out remaining w/ #pens but would talk contract if traded to #canes

What makes you think he was offered the 10-year deal today? I don't get that impression at all.

if this really just means he won't do it right now as in like this week, then ya it means nothing. I assume its more along the lines of this summer.

To be honest I dont think you turn down a 10 year 60 million dollar contract offer if you dont already have a plan in place.

I'm pretty sure this tells Shero that he wants a bigger role and is likely to get that in Carolina. Shero im sure will be in talks with the Canes at this point. I just hope that Staal rejecting that deal doesn't **** us too badly in a return.

I can't imagine that Shero gave him the offer the day before his wedding, I imagine it was offered early in the week.

I'd like if Shero could do something like this:

Jokinen $3M -> 14/15 UFA
Sutter $2.067M -> 14/15 RFA
8th overall pick
38th overall pick

for

Staal
Jeffrey or Tangradi
22nd overall pick

Hey Jordan, I hear you are a little nervous about the wedding. He's a 60 million dollar contract to take your mind off it

Well this makes me feel a bit better. At least we will get a big return for him. But IMO he's no longer a penguin. We've seen the last of him in a pens jersey. Hopefully that 8th overall turns out to be a gem for us.

Would you guys really want him at a 6M cap-hit for 10 years? I'm not so sure he's worth that to us.

Not unless he's willing to play wing. He's already getting lots of ice time on special teams to get his 16-20min per game.

@MolinariPG

Hate to interrupt anyone's hyperventilation, but Staal hasn't asked to be traded and Penguins aren't trying to deal him. #OKBackToPanicking

He would have to be traded in the next 24 hours. At least we'd know

The fact that the Pittsburgh beat writers had it confirmed so quickly certainly suggests that someone on the Penguins side of things is leaking this out -- i.e. this wouldn't be another team trying to put it out there as a ploy.

Doesn't seem to make much sense that Staal's camp would be talking on the eve of his wedding of all times. So I'd have to guess it's coming out of the Pens' front office. We've seen this before when bad contract news hits. We knew about Talbot's offer, floated out there as if to say, "Look, fans. We tried."

The situations aren't the same of course, so it's tough to draw broad conclusions like that. But I'm trying to figure out what the advantage is in putting this out there.
