Rumor Blackhawks Shopping Hjalmarsson and Montador

League sources told the Sun-Times that the Hawks are actively shopping defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, who has two years left on a four-year contract with a $3.5 million salary-cap hit.

A league source also said the Hawks are looking for takers for defenseman Steve Montador, who has three years left on a four-year deal carrying a $2.75 million cap hit.

Montador’s value isn’t nearly as high, especially considering he’s 32, recovering from a concussion and had an up-and-down first season with the Hawks. A source indicated that if Montador (modified no-trade clause) can’t be moved, the Hawks may be open to burying his contract in the minors, as they have for Cristobal Huet and Rostislav Olesz.

I thought the Montador signing was a head-scratcher last year. He was solid the season before (26 points with Buffalo), but he was never going to be able to live up to a 4 year, $11 million deal. Add in concussion issues and the only way he gets dealt is if someone can dump a bad contract the other way.

no the Hawks are not looking to shed salary just to do it. They are trying to win, trading away a top 4 d-man for a pick doesn't really help that.

I totally agree with you. This would make more sense if the Blackhawks managed to sign Ryan Suter to a contract.

My feeling is that if Hjammer gets dealt, it will be for a current roster player and not a pick or prospect. That's not to say a prospect or pick wouldn't be included, but I'd say a roster play must be in the deal for it to get done.

yeah, but there's no way to know if they can or not...so it'd be too risky to trade Hammer then not get Suter.
