To kind of piggyback on to everyone else's points, it's clear that there's a difference between a #7 overall and a #28 which is why we shouldn't trade the pick for Staal straight up. We aren't a Staal away from winning the cup, need to continue (hopefully depending on how Granlund and Brodin pan out) to keep hitting on these high draft picks because that's how we'll get better. We need that cheap young talent in order to win that are actual NHL'ers.

With Staal I'd see him as a part of the youth movement. He's SIX YEARS younger than Mikko. Obviously he needs a LTC. But man what an upgrade over Cullen.

I don't see him as part of youth movement because he has an expiring 4.5million deal, and is already considered a UFA, meaning we will have to pay full price to keep him around.

Then he'll be a great target in UFA next year. Maybe we should even trade for his UFA rights next offseason. The point being, if he's unsigned, we shouldn't trade for him, and if he's signed he's worth too much for us to trade for him.

7th overall, Coyle, and Cullen for Staal and a Pens public demand for Cullen. Staal is better than Coyle is ever going to be, and the 7th overall is the price you have to pay to get that upgrade.

Steep price, but worth it. Especially if Lats sticks around and Bulmer projects out.

Say we trade for Staal. We give up Coyle and the 7th as the main pieces. What are the odds he re-signs here? 20%? 30%? Is it really worth it?

Cullen would be of zero interest to Pittsburgh. They have Crosby and Malkin and are dealing a center.

I'm not sure who they have in their system to fill in as 3C once Staal is gone, so they might have some use for him. However, we've gotten rather far away from the draft talk in this thread.

I think Russo said that the Wild would have to talk to Staal about his desire for a long term contract before any trade is done. So if the Wild do trade for Staal, I would think that conversation happened and the Wild liked what they heard.

Bob McKenzie‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

Breaking news: Hearing Jordan Staal turned down 10-yr mega offer from PIT. Has indicated to PIT he doesn't plan on signing extension now.

Much more importantly:

If Staal won't re-up in PIT, where he loves it, not expected to extend with anyone else who may trade for him. Except perhaps Carolina. #bro

I take that to mean, "Jordan Staal will not sign long-term in Toronto."

More likely "Staal will not sign long-term unless he's playing with one of his big brothers."

Eh, you need to read the lines a little bit with Canadian media that is based out of Toronto. 50% of TSN's audience thinks that every guy on the block or free agent is coming to the Leafs. They might just be trying to manage expectations.

If that's true than the Staal interest is off. I'm guessing they offered 10 years at $5m per, but he wants top six ice time, possibly more money, and maybe he has other things he wants.

He has his Cup, he probably wants to hit UFA and get paid. I think he'd get $6.5-7M for 6-8 years myself.

Oh well. Fun fantasy while it lasted.

Well we can certainly offer him that here. Next year Backstrom comes off the books, we need a good 2C, and Minnesota is a great place to live.

Only thing missing is his brother.

So what kind of incriminating photos does GMCF have to use against Carolina...

No, you just need to know your hockey personalities better. If we were talking about PJ Stock or some other HNIC type you might have a point, but not with McKenzie.

He just got married or is getting married so there has to be something bachelor party related.

To NYR: 7th overall + Seto
To MIN: Marc Staal

Since there's no way that Eric's coming out of Carolina until that contract's up (team like that can't trade a fan favorite for less than Crosby), we could pick up the other brother and pimp the 6 hour drive back home.

/please note, I'm not actually advocating this

So is Jordan Staal just going to fight to become a free agent as soon as possible? Is his plan really to force a trade to Carolina?

I guess.

Another point to consider...if this season gets canceled and you give up big assets for a 1-year Staal, that's not good at all.

I'm cooling on it quite a bit.

Staal drives the bus, turned down mega deal from pit, them getting 7th And a top 6 winger for staal who can go to Fa is better then people realize and very feasible
