I've read that he doesn't want to sign an extension with Pittsburgh at this time. I haven't seen anything about him not signing an extension with any team. If his agent would say such a thing, it would basically guarantee that Staal would stay in Pittsburgh for a lame-duck season.

Let's just sign him for free next year.

Seriously, when is the next time the Wild will have a lottery pick?

C'mon, a bit of confidence folks.

His exact quote probably could have been taken either way, however the accompanying commentary (namely from McKenzie) indicated the original context implied "any team not Carolina" would not get an extension.

Sounds like Carolina is the favorite for Staal by far.

No Staal. He's been clear on his desire to be a Brother Cane. I think he'd be a short term upgrade for us as our prospect pipeline stands. If we were to make a major trade to get a younger high end forward I would rather we make a push for a Bobby Ryan or JVR. All things being equal any one of those three forward will hurt to acquire because I would have to think we'd have to give up either Granlund, Coyle, Brodin plus to acquire. And thankfully Fletcher seems loathe to do that.

No, he's going to Carolina and i don't want to give up assets for a guy who to me is still a complete uknown how good a center he can be in your top 6.

As much as it kills me to say it; its still too soon for the wild to make its splash via trade for a top tier player- especially if it involved a first and a blue chip prospect (which it would for staal). We need to sit on these kids for a year, build some additional depth, and see what they got. Figure out who can hack it and who can't. If all of them improve then the wild just increased the value of their tradeable assets. If some of them don't pan out we still have the rest. This way we would take some of the risk out of the draft and develop plan. Just let the strongest survive.

If staal would do a sign and trade it would change things but i don't see it happening.

As far as top tier talent for the Wild it's Parise/Suter or bust this summer.

That's a negative on trading for him. Sounds like he'd flee the first chance he got. He wouldn't be happy. We don't need another Zid.

No. Staal or Ryan would cost too much.

This "Staal to Carolina" thing seem to have spread amazing fast, and everybody is accepting it without question.

If Fletcher got Staal's agent on the phone, and the agent said that Staal wouldn't re-sign on the Wild, then clearly you don't trade for him.

But, if I was Fletcher, until the above happens, I wouldn't get scared off because of internet gossip.

There is no proof that he is deadset on Carolina, in fact, I've heard many "rumors" that says that he would NOT want to go to Carolina because his brother is there and does not want to mess with the chemistry of the team; similar to the Koivu bro's situation. All of this is nothing but speculation and it's not cool to make it sound as if him to Carolina is the actuality of the situation.

If we could find out if he would resign here first:

Staal to MN for Seto, Cullen, and our second.

Cullen would have to waive his NTC, but he would be a 3c again which is where he belongs and he would not have the pressure of actually having to score. Pits will need a decent 3c to fill the hole, and Cullen could totally fill that. Seto I believe would fit in well there and help their top 6 and is an established player still with decent value.

Pittsburgh would never do it. When they find out he's planning on re-signing, his price goes up big time.

It'd be a worthy trade if we could get him on board to re-sign, but I don't think that would be much of a guarantee at this point. I think we should continue to look for some good deals and used the ammo at a later time like Fletcher said in the Russo article a couple of days back, we don't know which kids are going to be the best ones. Let them develop and then see where we're at.

I'm fairly certain this is the first time in history someone has successfully made progress in correcting a repeat spelling/grammar issue on the internet. It's not fixed, but it's happening less and less and I'm amazed that's even possible.

until he signs a deal with us, it's just intentions. intentions can change in a hurry if he doesn't like a particular trade or whatever. no guarantees. so no.
