Matthew is not going to show up in highlight videos on any type of a regular basis. It's not in his game to be flashy but it is his game to be incredibly effective. That effectiveness translates into every area of the game and all of its situations. Simply put, he is a player who completes plays. He does it with the puck. Defensively in getting the puck out of danger. Offensively in reading the play and getting the puck to areas where his team can attack. He is superb in transition and can do it skating with the puck or passing the puck. He does it without the puck. He has very good body positioning and stick position where he can keep opponents at bay. His skating is strong in all regards and he asserts with his body & with excellent lower body strength and balance, he's a hard player to gain an advantage on. He has excellent sense and understands what is unfolding and what the appropriate response should be. He has great poise playing and the challenges of the game do not faze him in any way. He is a player who makes teams stronger.
Sounds like Gunnarsson, no?

To be honest that throught crossed my mind as well. Someone did mention that Schultz could be ready now while these players we are drafting could still be a few years away, but it will play a decision into his decision I am sure. With how many defensemen we had, and how we just picked 2 more, it certainly seems like some will be headed out the door soon.

I will admit at first I was confused as to why they went with another defenseman with their pick at first, but then I looked into him and see he dropped a lot in the rankings. Can't be upset getting a guy at 35 who some people had as going as high as #9 (Button).

LOL

Brandon Sutter is a quality NHL player, not a fourth-liner on par with any of our Marlies prospects.

Besides, it's not just about beating another team's offer. Staal wanted to go to Carolina to play with his brother. For all we know Burke was interested and would've been willing to give up more for him, but he wouldn't have re-signed here.

Wow can't beleive Finn wasstill available. This kid is great 2 way defenseman. Great in his own end, cleraiong the net, and coming up with puck in the corners. Burke actually got my respect on ths pick. Finn will make Leafs goalies, and PK a lot better too, plus a quick outlet pass. Leafs fans who are complaining should really look at thi skids profile, and video. He is real deal top 4, can play PK very well...I could go on for hours. What a great day for Leafs.

I see what you did there I think there is alot of us that called this one. But like one poster already said there has to be some D moving out soon for forward help.

Nashville got my guy at #50 Colton Sissons. This guy is gonna be something special. But still to get Matthew Finn where we did is great. Hopefully this will finally spell the end of Mike Komisarek.

I'm excited about this guy. In fact I wanted the leafs to trade up for him in the late first round. This also makes some defense prospects expendable in a deal for a goalie or center.

Also i'm excited to see both these guys on the junior team.

Washington gets Riberio for a steal, Burke sits back and does nothing. Fans say, good move Burke.

Leafs don't make the playoffs for 8 years, but Burke claims every draftpick is sure to be the clone of the current offensive/defensive superstar, despite all of our picks, aside from Gardiner, being flops so far. Fans agree.
Lol you truly know nothing, many people had Rielly on their radar, we just would of preferred a forward. If we didn't pick Gally, I wanted Forsberg... Obviously he fell for some reason so we picked the most skilled and highest ceiling defenseman in the draft.

Pitts won that trade with Carolina, They get Sutter, who is currently a 3rd line center with the skill to fill in on the 2nd line. They get a nice young prospect and pick Pouliot (not a fan) with the 8th pick. J.Staal is not a #1C. We don't need another skilled #2C in Ribeiro, waste of resources.

The three spots up in the draft order, combined with someone like Colborne would've been enough anyway. Don't act like you wouldn't have wanted Staal now that he's gone.

I did want Staal, but you can't make assumptions about what goes on behind closed doors (or about what Pittsburgh would've accepted in return, for that matter). For all we know Staal wouldn't have been willing to re-sign here, or maybe Burke did make a pitch for Staal but the offer didn't suit what the Pens were looking for as much as the Canes' offer did. Maybe he told Pens management that he would've preferred to go to Carolina. Who the hell knows?

They finished 10th in the league in goals last season so the need for a forward is not as bad as many people think. Second, they could be loading up on d-men in anticipation of moving one or two in a trade for a forward.

I am a Storm season ticket holder (no kidding from the name) and seen Finn play over 60 games. We will not see him at the Leafs level for a couple of years but he is one top notch prospect. He still gives the impression he has an upside we have not seen. His game is a solid one augmented by a calmness and intelligence that defies his years. Matt Finn has a solid accurate shot from the point and Iis an adequate sometimes rally good playmaker. He is fine in his own end with good leadership qualities. When he was out with injuries the Storm was a different team with trouble in getting the puck out. We should be happy if he continues to develop. Think Gunnarson with more offensive potential.
