Why do they always play 90's (and to some extent) 80's music to open hockey games

One time in Pittsburgh they played High Speed on Ice by Talas. I got so excited I emailed Billy Sheehan to tell him. I'm pretty certain I was the only one that really knew the song. Talas was a great band out of Buffalo back in the early 80's. Billy went on to David Lee Roth, Mr. Big, and a lot more.

This counter-argument is used a lot. People also say that classic radio stations only hand-pick the good songs so you remember past decades being better.

What are some of your favorite songs from the mid to late 00s and 10s?

This is probably true. The stuff shoved down our throats by the music industry is absolute garbage.

A lot of it is. I get to travel pretty much everywhere with what I do. I have found some good stations that I like. I guess the question is what you like.

I like Korn, Mudvayne, Slipknot, Hellyeah and a stuff like that along with clasic metal. Every now and than, I find a station that meets my needs. I like WJRR 101.1 in Orlando. They play lots of Mudvayne and Pantera.

Agree. If I had to rank the decades with the best music 1960's to present it would be.

1. 70's
2. 90's
3. 60's/80's
4. 2000s

Most of the mainstream music today sucks but there has always been crappy pop music in every decade... It's just worst now. There's still good music out there and always will be. You just have to dig deeper today to find the real good stuff.

Pretty convenient to pit the worst 2000s acts against the best (well not really) 1980s acts.

The word popular is very important there.

The state of pop music is in absolute shambles...but there's a ton of great music out there for anyone willing to put in the work to find it.

Unfortunately for us that tends not to include the people putting these intros together.

Because the average age in the arena is probably 30-40

Glad to see most of the responses in this thread are exactly as dumb as I thought they would be.

No good music today? Please.

A lot of it doesn't appeal to me, but it doesn't really mean it sucks. I guess I'm just getting old. I've always been pretty particular with music having mostly listened to jazz and classical and drum corps stuff in high school.

A lot of the stuff we hear on the radio is just as hand-picked. There's a lot of good music, but it doesn't get played. I hear things on the radio I like occasionally, but don't know the names. Other stuff I like:

Bleeding Heart Show - The New Pornographers - 2005
I Will Follow You Into The Dark - Death Cab for Cutie - 2006
Fear Of A Blank Planet - Porcupine Tree - 2007
15 Steps - Radiohead -2005
Only This Moment - Röyksopp - 2005
Spilt Needles - The Shins - 2007
Take Me Out - Franz Ferdinand - 2004

I think the misconception is due to what is popular. For example, in the 90's you could argue bands like pearl jam, nirvana, STP, Alice In chains, Radiohead, NIN, SoundGarden, Rage, Chili Peppers were in the mix for top 40 type listening. Now your top 40 and average music consumer is listening to a higher percentage of very bad, corporate, assembly line ****** music.

But you're right in there is LOTS of good music being made now. Also, there was lots of crap in 90's too.

It's because hockey games are usually attended by white people, who are ALWAYS behind the times musically.

Good arean music should be:

Family friendly;
Recognizable; and
Pump you up.

In order to do that, you're going to need an element of cheese in their too. New music takes itself too seriously to make cheesy arena music.

I'm 20 years old, practically growing up in the era of ****** music, and I can clarify that it's not necessarily an old people thing to say today's music sucks. I personally cannot STAND the majority of modern music and am perfectly happy with hockey arena's playing older stuff. The Isles played a lot of modern music this past season and I hated it, it just doesn't mesh with hockey one bit.

Now, if they play bands like The Hives, The White Stripes, or The Black Keys more often then I'd be fine with that. There is still good music out there, they just need to avoid the main stream hip hop/rap/R&B BS because it rarely if ever fits the feel of a hockey game IMO.

I'd say the year it changed was 1998. That's when bands like Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock started flooding the mainstream, Britney Spears came out that year, Puff Daddy took over the rap charts... '98 was the year that everything turned to commercialized ****.

A lot of other people argue that there shouldn't be arena music at all, and have only and organ.

This is a great song: http://youtu.be/kDWgsQhbaqU It's so over the top and ridiculous, especially the ending that sounds like it's from Les Miserables: http://youtu.be/BpGA_VRc1Ro

I laugh and smile whenever I hear it.

Because hockey music doesn't have an era, its just collected when it fits. Alot comes from the 90's (twilight zone, no limit) but that doesn't mean current music couldn't be added. It just means there isn't much to add of recent.

I dont even listen to much of this kind of music but it just fits hockey.

This. I'm 23 years old and find myself embarrassed to be a part of the generation that will be known for this crap to future generations.

'tis why I stick to Led Zeppelin and death metal.

Came in here to say this. I do hear a lot of terrible, current music in Boston during the games though. My friends hate the fact that I complain about the music as much as I do.

The music Staples plays during warmups flat out sucks, I mean it is TERRIBLE!!!

But I've also read the warmup music is chosen by the players - and they are a bit younger than me...

90's and 70's music is universally more accepted than today's rock/pop. Those eras were two of the greatest periods in music history.

Everyone knows 80s were the best time for music. Gimme a ring when an arena plays Human League or Erasure during games; I'll bandwagon for their team in the playoffs.
