Why do they always play 90's (and to some extent) 80's music to open hockey games

Just give Bieber a chance, he has talent. Listen with an open mind, he has smooth songs.

Some of you guys sound like your parents. There's plenty of great music today, and there's also some garbage in every decade.

Because classic rock is 10x better than most crap produced today. And everyone listens to it, from 15 to 70 year olds, not too many 30+ year olds listen to Bieber or Gaga, thank god.

Any bands/singers that feel a need to have dancers on stage should be locked up immediately.

At a AC/DC concert you will see age groups from 15-65, at Bieber you will see girls under 15. Needless to say I would think that most people have better taste than 15 year old girls.Whenever classic rock bands tour such as Eagles, Stones,AC/DC, U2 tour they are always the highest grossing tours of the year, I wonder why. Nothing worse than going to a concert and seeing 4 guys up there in t-shirts and jeans, give me a show baby.

Exactly. The keyword that a lot of people are missing is "popular." I think the popular music of the 80's and 90's was a lot better than the popular music of today. But it's highly debatable whether music as a whole is better today than it was the last three decades.

all this needs to go.
It's a hockey game. Not a Clear Channel Playlist.

Not all of the music played is crap, but it becomes highly unbearable having to hear it so often.

Anyone who thinks today's music sucks is ignorant. Learn how to use the internet. It's as simple as going on Youtube, Last.fm, Itunes, or any internet radio site/app. The type of music you guys are looking for probably isn't going to be played on the radio or your tv, this isn't the 80's where they play good hard rock and metal on the radio. Now days you have to look for that kind of music...and it's really not that hard to find good bands/artists. The mainstream was definitely better in the 80's, but just because the good newer bands aren't mainstream doesn't mean they aren't good.

I wish people would give examples whenever they call people ignorant for not liking modern music.

Yeah, the rhythm does not work at all for a sports game.

Metallica has been mentioned several times in this thread now, yet the posters mentioning them fail to include the fact that 99% of the time, you're going to be hearing either Enter Sandman, or Master of Puppets. Both songs have been so overplayed that I can't even stand them anymore. Crazy Train as well. And metal is by far my favorite genre of music.

If you like punk rock and music with a real sense of humor youtube some "Dead Milkmen" (they are terrible musically but funny as ****)

Also, you will never ever hear the aforementioned groups music at a hockey game.

Because people who love 80s music have more money than people who love the music of today. Music that you're fond of makes you happy and when you're happy you plunk down 100+ bucks for that Brad Doty jersey you've been coveting. ;-)

These are just the kinds of bands that I was referring to earlier in the thread when I was defending today's music. I'd also like to add Destroyer, The Flaming Lips, Kings Of Convenience and Guillemots to name a few.. Good music's there, you just have to find it. I recommend Last.fm, it's a great tool to search music from the genres of your liking.

And to stay on topic: I'm not really bothered by the music in games. Songs are overused and old, but I prefer it to no music at all... Somehow can't imagine a hockey game without certain kind of music.

Hahaha, after looking at this thread, the reason they play old music at games is because all of you would start an endless *****-fest if any of that "evil, horrible new music" played.

Searching by genre would be revelant if there wasn't a hundred genres with a thousand sub-genres.
