Why do they always play 90's (and to some extent) 80's music to open hockey games

So you pick the bad artists from today?

Obviously 80s music is better then justin ****ing bieber...but 80s music isn't better then the GOOD music today.

They should play more...something like eminem. All the people in their 20s who are starting to buy season tickets grew up knowing all eminem's songs by heart a decade ago. He still produces music...and, his music pumps you up.I'd rather pump up music then cotton eyed joe for crying out loud. Something that makes me wanna get off my seat and join the players on the ice. That isn't oldies. Aside from a few classics, today's music has more base/beats that are up beat and pump you up.

A fairly modern song that is amazing for pump up is remember the name by fort minor.

Also Royce is amazing...but he's probably too vulgar for hockey games.

The contrast between this and music forums that I post on is mind-numbing.

should never be playing just bieber...or lady gaga...ever...not now. Not in 5 years. Not in 20 years.

What they should be doing is playing good music from the current times.

Not bad music from the current times or good music from 20-30 years ago.

Since when are the only 2 options bad music from now, or good music from the 80s.

I suggest good music from now. Not this "we will rock you" crap or "if i was your girlfriend" crap from justin bieber.

This is hockey. I want tough SOB music...not soft pop.

Music at hockey games should be all Nickelback, all the time, no exceptions.

I dig a lot of modern music. The new Norah Jones album is very good; for pop, One Direction has a couple of songs that are very strong; I'd rather listen to Ed Sheeran than Bob Dylan or Neil Young; good guitarist, too.

I really wish they would not only stop playing 1980s and 1990s songs -- but also the ones from the 2000s and beyond.

I'd like to see old style organs put back into the arenas, and have someone playing LIVE music again! It's so much better than canned garbage, which does absolutely nothing to get the audience jazzed up. In fact, at Rogers Arena here in Vancouver, I notice that it actually QUIETS the crowd down! The opposite of the intended effect.

Think about it: what gets you more excited... hearing one of your fave bands at a live concert, or listening to them on your stereo at home. It's a no-brainer.

And why do we need a pop song played when a goal is scored?? Just blare the goal horn and let everyone scream and go YAY. No need for a dumb song there.

Are you seriously implying that 99% of today's music is worse than "Cotton eye Joe", "What is love" and "Get ready for this"??

Yes I'd rather listen to Justin Bieber than listen to Brian Johnson vomit into the microphone. Bon Scott was great, but IMHO anyone who likes the former's "voice" is hiding behind a facade of manliness.

Agreed. Picking lady gaga as the representative of today's music is like picking Madonna as the representative of 80's music...

Gaga is no Madonna.

It would be pretty fair to select Madonna as an 80s ambassador.

If you chose the later to either of these questions,
You aren't really making the best comparisons.

Kid's that would have listened to Metallica (or ACDC) are probably listening to modern metal/rock bands. Justin Bieber/Lady Gaga fans would have been listening to New Kids on the Block or some other 80's, 90's pop acts.

Most of today's music does suck, I'll agree, but your choice of comparisons is flawed. Not singling you out specifically, but I've read that type of argument before and it just doesn't make sense. There WAS crap music back in the day, most of it just hasn't survived.

Today's music isn't crap, nor has pop always been crap.

Madonna / Michael Jackson > anything in todays world of pop.

Metallica / Iron Maiden / AC/DC > any metal around today

etc.

However there are some great bands which have been mentioned in this thread, now you just have to look a little harder for them.

And as for the reason behind it. even though it's going off topic:

What the record industry has decided to do is not take a chance on anything that is different for fear of losing money, people can point to various bands and times where things went wrong with music, the point at which it went wrong was when millions of people decided it was ok to steal music. At that point record companies could no longer invest in bands such as Guns N' Roses, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Nine Inch Nails, or Jane's Addiction, basically any band or artist looking to go against a trend got put to the side because the major labels couldn't risk losing money, so now you have a boring stream of the same old same old being released.

Still, 80s pop music was better than the stuff that gets made now. I say this is someone young enough not to believe that for nostalgic purposes. Prince >>>>>>> Lady Gaga, Beiber, etc., for example.
It was still pop music, but it was significantly more interesting than the stuff that gets made today. At least they used actual musicians and had more going on than vocals and a computer-generated drum beat.

I think you're bang on, especially with the last paragraph.
