WGR reports - Regier turnes down trade offer [21 to further back]

One offer involved #21, the other involved a roster player that Regier turned down due to not wanting to disrupt team chemistry.

Commence with wild speculation...

EDIT - He did not turn down a deal for a roster player.

Again, same thing I said in the other thread -- there is no issue with not trading down right now. If Regier is, as has been speculated, is trying to swing a bigger deal, he's weakening his position by dealing down from 21. As well, if he retains the pick, we don't know who may be available at that point. It's too early for a mid-late 1st swap out.

As for the player, eh. We have no idea what the offer is or who they requested.

You never want to tinker with an underachieving team's chemistry. Do that and you leave yourself vulnerable to missing the playoffs entirely.

Darcy knows that the team needs a retool -- he's said as much. He's also said that he's looking to add.

So, if he did turn down a player for #21, then I think the player must not have been a fit in Buffalo (or maybe would have disrupted whatever chemistry this team has --- which might say that the player involved is a problem child?)

I trust Darcy to make the right move(s) at this point.

Listening to Darcy's interview now. Sounds like he's trying to use the two 2nd's to get into the late-1st or top of the 2nd.

They know who they want to draft at 21, but they're not sure he's going to be there at 21. So they're discussing whether they want to make a move to lock in that better pick now, or wait to see how the draft develops and they may not have to move up to get that player. Interesting.

Meaning the trade down is basically negotiating against himself.

That means #21 is more important as a pick than it is in a package to trade up or for a roster player. Yes, interesting.

BTW, Regier did not say he had an offer for a player but rejected it because it would disrupt chemistry. He said that he doesn't want to make a deal to fill one hole but create a bigger hole elsewhere, and he also said it'd be counterproductive to move a player who has good chemistry with other players. No firm offers for such a player, though.

Sounds like trade partners want Stafford and he doesn't want to move him. Just speculation on my part.

Gotcha, and yes, I would think "chemistry" would mostly involve Ennis/Stafford/Foligno(?).

Yeah, I just got this part myself.

This is a more correct summary of what Darth Darcy actually said than the original post.

It's possible Roy's value will be maximized at the trade deadline.

Not interested in trading down, and who knows what was even offered. Meh, nothing to see here.

but...but...but...darcy could have made a trade and he didn't!!!111 this means he's a bad gm because he didn't try to get rick nash for a 17th round draft pick and a case of gatorade!!11!!

The issue at hand here is the flavor of Gatorade, obviously. If we want Fruit Punch and they're offering Lemon-Lime, clearly that's a non-starter. They're just not comparable.

What Regier actually said

06/22: Darcy Regier speaks to Kevin Snow of Sabres.com. <5:56>
  • Weighing the opition of using the four picks vs. trading up.
  • Could use the two seconds to move in/into the first round.
  • Had an offer to move back from #21.
  • Sees the potential to get a bigger forward; also defense in a d-heavy draft.
  • Waiting for dominoes to fall; knows a couple defensemen are available.

So if I read this right we may be looking at three first round picks? Based in Regier moving the 2 seconds for a first.

I got the impression that if he had to use the picks because he couldn't get another deal, he would try to take the two seconds and move late 1st/top 2nd.

It does seem like he has no intention of actually drafting 4 players with these picks.

I agree... But more along the lines of the fact that dealing him at the deadline would make zero sense, and would be an indicator of a pretty abysmal year.
