When the Wild were in first place in the NHL in December:

"No team has ever gone from first place in the league to missing the playoffs completely, so I'm confident we'll finish at least 6th in the West, if not win the division."

In 2006 or so, I was playing EA's NHL 2005 (or 2006, can't remember the exact year) in dynasty mode as the Nucks. A season in, I traded both Sedins to Alanta for Dany Heatly. Heatly had already recorded a 100 point season (in real life) and both Sedins didn't look like they'll ever develop into more than a point a game players (in real life). So, I traded them for Heatley. In the game, a few seasons go by and Heatley became more and more crappy while I saw both Sedins on the Thrashers getting 100+ point seasons.

At the time, I thought to myself, no way this is ever going to happen. Guess I was wrong. Not only did EA get it right on the Sedins, but they saw how quickly Heatley became crappy as well.

Sedin-Sedin-Kovalchuk line sounds awesome. Bet that had something to do with it.

Chris Chelios when he said he hated Detroit and would never play there. I believed him.

Even as a Devils fan, I honestly thought Paul Martin was going to flourish in Pittsburgh.

I thought Mike Komisarek would be an anchor on our blue-line(as in top-pairing d-man) and lead the way as the best shutdown d-man.

I thought P Mart would be a beast in Pittsburgh, since he'd have guys like Letang/Michalek to play with.

I thought the same about Fedorov. Watched him light up the Oilers in a preseason game (3 goals I believe) and then score in the shootout. It was the year they introduced the shootout and they had one after every preseason game, regardless of the score.

I also thought TJ Hensick would be great in the NHL.

All time, I shudder to think. Last season:
- Thought Phoenix would fall pretty hard replacing Bryzgalov with Mike Smith
- Thought NJ would struggle and miss the playoffs due to a lack of centers, aging Marty, a lack of PMDs, and no more Jacques Lemaire. Didn't realize Henrique would emerge at C, Elias would play great at C, Larsson and Zidlicky would give them solid upgrades in the PMD department, and that DeBoer would replace Lemaire very well

Me too. I believe as well pronged was coming off a pretty big Olympic bed **** so no one exactly expected him to be, well, what he has been since.

Fedor is the classic case of a guy who's very skilled but doesn't have the mindset to play up to his potential.

When I was in Halifax I watched Voracek, MacMillan, Marchand and Hiller play a lot.

Thought Voracek would be a 1st line threat, and that only Hiller would be a useful NHLer of the other 3. Of the 4, I believe Marchand to be the best - I had him 4th.

I never thought E. Karlsson would be an effictive NHLer, let alone a Norris winner.

Justin Pogge, worst case scenerio, would be a reliable NHL back up.

James Reimer was the real deal. (Could still turn out to be.)

As a general consensus, not much tops the 2005-2006 season. The Canes were picked by most to be in the bottom 5 in the league and ended up with the 3rd best record in the league and winning the Cup. Virtually nobody picked Buffalo and Anaheim to do much either and they ended up in he Conference finals. Edmonton was at least picked by some to make the playoffs, but picked by as many to miss the playoffs as well.

I don't recall another time when the SC champ and all 4 of the conference finalists weren't even picked to be in the playoffs before the season started.

As a swede i didnt think Erik Karlsson would be this good, i thought he would be a 30-40p Mike-Green-Wannabe.

And i believed in Bouwmeester in Calgary, thinking that they would be a real threat for the cup. With him being an almost-norris.

Watching Brett Hull play in the AHL with the Moncton Golden Flames, I never thought he would amount to much.

I was wrong.

"Why would the Bruins trade Phil Kessel?"
"Thomas Kaberle is a great acquisition and will be a savior to the Bruins powerplay"
-Who needs Joe Colborne, a first-rounder, and a second rounder anyway, right?
