Also, I don't see how Pittsburgh can afford to go after Parise. Yes, with the moving of Staal, they have "$14 million in cap space". But, that's with the temporary cap. If RB is right, and the cap, after the CBA re-negotiations, comes back down to the approximate current level of $64 million, even a best case signing with a cap hit of $6 million leaves them very little room to re-sign Niskanen and Tangradi to fill out the roster, and would leave them with only 6 D-men on the roster.

no. let's get bigger. we can get 17g somewhere else without resorting
to signing 5 -8/160lb Sullivan.

And that's assuming Crosby and Malkin get a cap hit of $9 million. Wouldn't be surprised if a team is willing to have a cap hit of $10 million with either one of them.

I wouldn't mind having a cap hit of 10mil for Crosby or Malkin, they're that good.

Parise softens stance on Rangers

Well, I don't know where this should go, but it's major news regardless. Mods, feel free to move if needed.

About the only certainty so far is that Parise will not end up skating in a blue shirt at Madison Square Garden.

Asked by New Jersey media last week about joining the New York Rangers, Parise gave an emphatic "no way."

He clarified the statement Wednesday.

"I was put on the spot there a little bit," he said. "We'll see what happens."
There hasn't been much discussion about this, but I knew this would be the case all along. Zach has NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING to gain and a lot to lose by eliminating one of the biggest bidders for his services come July 1st like that. Even if he has no plans of signing with the Rangers, he could pull a New York Yankees type move and use them to drive up his market value.

I agree they're that good but both have injury issues.

That 10mil in cap hit can generally pay for a top pair D or 2/3 of a top line.

I think depth is more important yet almost as hard to get.

I'm sure Parise and his agent would prefer to at least have us as leverage.

And even if he doesn't sign here, I'd prefer that too. May as well make sure that if someone else gets him, they are saddled with as high a cap hit as possible.

Just a hunch? lol Everyone knows he's going to make him a big offer. Parise is basically THE UFA forward this summer. The question is more about where the guy wants to play. He's going to get paid wherever he goes.

His agent told him to recant his previous statement surely. It was dumb of him to scratch one of the biggest players off his list so quickly.

This will improve our team immensely IMO
Even if Gabby is out first half of year
Hagelin is now in from scratch
As is Staal
Stepan, AA, McD, MDZ are still developing and should get better
Dubinsky, Boyle and Richards might all possibly rebound a bit from last year
i think we just won the cup

Not any more than Nash's who has put up worse numbers lately and will cost assets.

I said from the beginning the Parise's "No to the Rangers" statement meant nothing. And this quote just confirms that.

He ends up going where the money is -- book it

You can bet Parise's agent told him to recant on the not signing with the Rangers comment, to rule them out would be incredibly stupid; you can use the Rangers as leverage if nothing else.

The Phoenix ownership mess has been going on for 3 years, I don't think it'll get settled in a week. I'd give Whitney at most 2 years around 8 million (avg 4m per). I'd give Doan at most 1-2 years, I don't know what he made last year. Or I'd be willing to give Semin 1 year around 4m, don't think he'd take it. Maybe give Semin 1 year plus options that gives him another year depending on reaching incentives.

I always read that Parise quote as "we're in the middle of a playoff race and you ask me that? I will not give you any quotes for your stupid headlines. There is no way I'm going to acknowledge your idiotic question." the actual quote was something along the lines of "no way, don't make a headline out of it."
