Haven't read through the whole thread, but it seems like they picked one of the most mature options?

If that's the case, I think it's a good call.

After more research he could definitely become a good player, I'd just like to see the team try to address an obvious flaw, lack of team speed, with something like a first round pick.

The biggest problem with this pick is that Hertl just doesn't like a hockey name, you know? There is a reason Brent Gretzky did not succeed. It's the last name.

He will have to play with Havlat since Hertl doesn't speak English well and Havlat is a Czech also.

Wilson said at one point the Sharks were looking to move up in the draft order, then were prepared to go the other direction.

“Once we got to 14 or 15, the phone started ringing because we had talked to a lot of teams that if the guy we wanted wasn’t there, we were going to move back,” Wilson said.
“If Tomas hadn’t have been there, we would have moved out.”

....

“They questioned Pavelski’s speed and Logan’s too, so I’m not worried about that,” Burke said.

DW: "We've stayed away from Europe for a while, but we really think the fact that he has a Czech passport is irreleva-"

Burke: "Czech?"

DW: "Yeah. He plays in Prague"

Burke: "Prague, Nebraska. Right?"

DW: "No. he plays for Slavia Praha, in the Czech Republic."

Burke: "B....bu-.....but you said he was from Prague, Nebraska, then moved to Milford, Mass to play hockey. That his dream was to go to BU! YOU LIED TO ME WILSON! HOW DARE YOU!!!!" *runs away sobbing*

That's pretty much how I imagine the real interview went. Then Pollak was kind enough to fill in some phony material for Burke to spare him the embarrassment of the real thing being printed.

By the time any of these kids are ready, who's to say that speed is still an issue?

He should just say speed doesn't matter. Being a good player does.

I was so pissed tonight, I had been working during the draft so I recorded the draft and plugged my ears all night(not literally ) so I could watch it "live". Then of course the darn thing switched to csnba or whatever right before the sharks picked, then find out we picked some guy I did not know a lot about.

So then I come on the boards all mad that we didnt get TT or Grigs or murray, read the thread, LOL'd over all the witty, hilarious comments. Read up a little on hertl and realize he could be thornton-lite or pavelski-ish a few years down the road and become complacent with our choice.

Of course then you post that link where Doug is talking about having possibly moved up for a higher pick, and all I can see is red now, cause all I could think about until washingtons pick was "MOVE UP AND GET FORSBERG!!!!!".

Overall im not unhappy with the pick. Looks like the kid can be useful a few years from now(if we dont trade him......) but damn I really wanted us to move up for forsberg, a natural winger whoms strength is his shot and compete level.

You don't think so?

I think it's ripe for all sorts of ridiculous NHL.com headline puns.

oilers made it to the finals rt before their half decade trip to the cellar, and given their loaded roster, i would not be surprised to see them back there before us. the pens/blackhawks model works pretty well if you just want one cup.

but fine, since 05 the stanley cup winning la kings have 7 first rounders still with that team - kopitar, bernier, lewis, hickey, doughboy, forbort, and pearson. 7 guys in 7 years.

regardless, as for your original question about finding just one team that has more than 1/2 their first round picks during the past X years, there are plenty of teams that fit that bill.

not the sharks tho. sharks have since 1999 3 first rounders - couture, petreki, and hertl. 3 in 13 years.

Nieto is pretty fast...I like this pick actually...kid is compared to Jagr, not the fastest, strong on his skates and a playmaker wit the puck

Not to say that they all turned into Patrick Marleau, but they all managed to turn themselves into serviceable NHL caliber skaters. Murray not as much as the others, but he went from being a guy who was supposed to stick as a #7 to a top 4 guy for a few years.

Hertl is supposed to have decent quickness and agility. They can just get him a bit more straight line speed and he'll be fine.
Cheechoo as well. Probably their biggest achievement.

SJ seems to do a good job of making poor skating adequate, but can't seem to make adequate skaters above average.

Hertl-Hamilton-Nieto = our third line in 2014-15?

Trading these picks into other assets is only brushing off the real issue and you seem fine with that. I'm not.
The problem is, that you don't typically draft players like Boyle and Burns with a late-round pick.

It does seem to be a developmental issue, not an issue with identifying talent.

The failure is ameliorated somewhat, because Goc turned into a very good player elsewhere, and Wishart was traded whilst he was still valuable, but certainly Kaspar and Bernier sting. Though part of that may be DW shooting for the fences because he needed that type of player.

The **** is up with all this Hertl hate? It would have been nice to have a dynamic "sexy" guy like Teravainen in the pool, but it's not like Hertl's a complete scrub. For all the under-sized guys that get overlooked, and then become good players (Giroux, Little, Parise...), you're going to have your fair share of duds as well (Schremp, Bourret, McArdle...). Not trying to imply Teravainen will fall in the second category, but there should be healthy skepticism for a guy who wasn't on a lot of people's radars until mid-season.

Exactly. I am astounded by the Ducks in this regard. Compare rookie Ryan to current Ryan. There are a couple of others.

Getzlaf and even Perrty to an extent.

The Sharks also lost a lot when Strelow died. That was a great draft-pick-maker; draft the goalies, train them, then trade them for draft assets...

Very few are actually complaining about the pick but what's a Sharks thread without a little kvetching?

Would love to see them pick Colberg or Anton Slepyshev in the second round...

I was also sad to see Henrik Samuelsson drafted by Phoenix in the 1st. His dad just couldn't resist I guess haha. Luke Sutter in the 2nd please.
