Good pick. Burke is swinging for the fences with this pick. He'll be given the time he needs to develop and hopefully he develops into something special.

I really like this pick. After seeing how the first four selections went I was hoping for either Forsberg or Rielly.

IMO if we sign Schultz, we could well have the best d-corps in the entire league in a few years.

I'm looking at it like this ... with Gardiner, Reilly, Schenn, Gunnarsson, Blacker, Percy, Granberg, and Nilson ... we're pretty stacked with D prospects with value - we can move 2 of them to get some of what we need up front.

Exactly. That's why you always draft the BPA

Shocked that Forsberg has fallen this far, but I really like this pick.

I still think it was nuts to pass on Grigo - that's the kind of pick that can make you a Cup contender if you nail it - but there's upside here too.

in the short-term, I'm more curious about who's going to play D. if we assume we manage to dump Komi, we've got Phaneuf/Liles/Schenn/Gunnarson/Gardiner/Franson lined up as our top 6 D, with no shortage of other D lined up. meanwhile, we have holes at forward. i don't think Franson has the value we need to make a legitimate forward upgrade, Liles has no effective value, Phaneuf's not going anywhere - unless Gardiner goes the other way in a blockbuster, this suggests Gunnar or Schenn leaves this summer.

The Leafs have excellent Swedish scouts and if they really believed in Filip Forsberg, the Leafs would have taken him.

But like MPS, they clearly didn't think highly of him and so they went after the player with the highest potential which is Reilly.

For all those people who always say "But Burke says he builds from the net out and that isn't what he's doing", he had Schenn when he walked in the door and has added:

Gardiner
Percy
Blacker
Reilly
Granberg

along with the trade for Phaneuf. Are we overloaded there? Yes but odds are trades will thin that out sometime.

Schultz too?

Well you apparently didn't see most of those players(some of whom were hurt) go to the Calder cup finals.

Wanted Grigo or Forsberg, but I like this pick.

I guess we are not getting Schultz, though.

Reilly is going back to Moose Jaw next year. No way Burke lets him play unless he pulls a Gardiner at training camp.

He's got a great set of skills.

I said time and again that if we had to pick a defenseman, I want Reilly.

-High IQ
-Amazing skater (It's comparable to Gardiner, Karlsson etc)
-Good two way game.
-Offensive potential is unlimited. He's the best offensive defenseman of this draft without a doubt.

Dear complainers; notice how Forsberg still remains on the board.

This draft has been known to be D heavy for over a year now and the draft board shows it

Phaneuf - Rielly
Schultz - Gardiner
Schenn - Liles

Gunnarsson
Franson
Holzer
Blacker
Percy

I'm fine with that. Now all we need is Luongo and to trade for Jordan Staal.

edit: well then... there goes that idea

Why would getting Reilly have anything to do with Schultz.

Schultz is NHL ready and a free agent. We'll be chasing him, whether he wants to come or not is his choice.

Rielly probably won't be ready for at least a few years..
