I was thinking they'd split up Backstrom and Ovechkin to get a more balanced attack. If Ovechkin can play at his super-high level, he won't need Backstrom centering him. He just needs the puck on his stick and Ribeiro can do that perfectly.

Backstrom hardly played with Ovechkin this post-season so your line of thinking isn't unusual here. I don't really see it happening again (I think it was more of an adjustment to get Semin producing) but it's not unheard of.

Riberio only has a year left on his deal and the Stars needed to move on. That being said Joe should have been able to easily get a 1st and a prospect for him. I'm really thinking that Joe didn't want to trade him to a team in the West, because we could have gotten A LOT better.

Riberio is absolutely horrible defensively and is not a good PP player at all. He's one of the best playmaking centers in the game especially at ES, but he was a big part of our problems last year on the PP. By the end of the year he also had ot be heavily sheltered at ES, getting almost primarily offensive zone starts and no defensive zone starts. This forced Jamie Benn to take primiarily defensive draws as Gulutzan could not trust Riberio's line to take defensive draws.

This is a good shakeup for the Stars, but Joe needed to get more. If this was all he could get at the draft, he should have waited until after July 1st.

Caps fill a big hole they needed. Laich can now be where he belongs(on a good team), center the 3rd line and Johansson can play wing, I guess.

Yeah he is; he's a natural leader with true grit, and a good goal scorer too. I'm confident he'll wear at least an 'A' in his future.

I guess you could've justified the Neal trade, they needed a guy like Goligoski at the time but this is just lol....Nieuwndyk needs to get better value at trades unless no GM wanted his contract (which isn't that bad nowadays).

Guess Benn's staying at C even if they sign an FA

Needless to say, it's a confusing deal. Right now for Dallas, they need to do something.

Goal scoring for @ovi8 just got easier with @ribz63 passing the puck. Enjoy the tap ins.... I did!

Holy hell. I knew Dallas wanted to go south, but this deal is so north for Washington that Dallas may as well get frostbite now.

I don't think this deal is as imbalanced as people think it is. Riberio is a UFA next year and although a great offensive player, he has question marks on defense. He'll slot in well with Washington, but Dallas got a good prospect for an impending UFA.

Depending on whether one still want to refer to Orlov and Holtby as prospects and ones opinion on Galiev, he could be listed anywhere as their #2 - #5 prospect.

I think he will be a good player. He needs some time to bulk up to be really effective based on his playing style.

I think most would put Holtby and Orlov above Eakin as far as prospects by pure definition.

If he is second, he's a massive gulf away from Kuznetsov.

As for will he make the Stars out of camp, well, do you need a smaller 3rd liner with a bit of offensive upside and a good 2 way game with some speed? I think poor 2nd liner is the top point for him, but that's a bit generous. His size is always going to limit him.

So in the end, it's Janne Niinimaa for Eakins and a 54th pick? Still a good trade for Dallas!

This trade pleases me.

MoJo is the Caps' future #2 he's just not ready yet, we can't all be Backstrom.

Eakin was never projected to be more than a #3 center and Adam Henrique he is not, Eakin will never see the top 6 in a team with any kind of depth.

Come on Ribeiro is not horrible defensively, not even close to that. He's average at worst and in the past he's been our best defensive centre. Gulutzan didn't trust him but it doesn't mean he was bad.

A fantastic move for GMGM. MR63 brings everything the Capitals needed, and could help them make a run at either Parise or even re-sign Semin.

I do expect them to try and split Ovechkin and Backstrom unless they grab an elite wing to play on the top line. Caps know that Ovechkin draws the top shutdown lines, and they need that offensive punch away from Ovechkin and that defense.
