The past is the past. Riberio was horrid defensively this past season.

Wasn't all on Ribeiro since it's not like the powerplay was loaded with the best players. I'd like to think that if Benn would have been on the top unit with him the PP wouldn't have been so bad, as IIRC he wasn't that bad on the PP a few years ago.

Ribeiro needs to be force fed offensive zone starts to be successful, not sure how that fits with the Caps other players.

That list isn't done by Capitals related people, it would be more like in no particular order, Kuznetsov, Galiev, Holtby, and Orlov being better than him.

Oh yeah can we please stop with the advanced statistics crap.

He had 32 points in his last 33 games.

the caps fill a major need and give up only a second rounder and a prospect who will top out as a 3rd liner. can't complain about that.

Eakin has a nice snap shot and is decent in his own end, but I don't see him as a top 6.
I can't believe the Caps got Forsberg and Ribiero for Varlamov and Eakin.

We just need Eakin to be a top 6 stopgap until Faksa is ready. Then I think he'll be a Bolland type 3rd line center. A very good to almost elite 3rd liner.

Yeah, that's ridiculous. He's also a better PP player than people give him credit for. I'm hoping Ribs has a career year. Love the guy and will always root for him.

Great deal for Dallas. Yes, the return is less than market value for a 70-point center, but let's face it. The last time Ribeiro's act wore thin with a team and they were forced to ship him out, all they got in return was Janne f'ing Niinimaa. This was a Jedi mind trick of the highest order. Joe is a freaking magician.

I'm surprised. I don't think Mike is a complete center or whatever but still...he has some great skills and produces his fair share.

I mean no disrespect to Stars fans, and they have no control over the General Managing of the team, but this trade is absolutely horrible.

This is a thread full of CORRECT armchair GMers.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but this trade, along with tonight's other events, closed the book on the Varlamov trade:

Washington gave up Varlamov and Eakin and got Ribeiro and Filip Forsberg in return. Considering the Caps have two other promising young NHL-tested (and playoff tested) goalies, that's pretty remarkable value.

The Avs 1st rounder may not have been the top 5 pick some Caps fans hoped it would be before the season, but then a consensus top-5 player fell into their laps at #11. So it all kind of worked out the same.

I think Dallas won this trade hands down.

First off let's get it straight, it's Ribeiro for Eakin, a 2nd round draft pick, and $5,000,000 to spend on next year's team. People tend to ignore the money this frees up for some reason... Is it possible to spend $5,000,000 more efficiently than on 1 unit of Mike Ribeiro? I would suggest that it is, even in the current economic climate of Brad Stuart making almost 4 million for some reason

second point Ribeiro was a liability in his own end. The Stars' 3rd line got hammered last season and the 1st line saw their production basically cut in half thanks to Gulutzan having to shelter the Ribeiro line. It does lead to some gaudy scoring numbers fair enough, but once again that boost to Ribeiro's production in the 2nd half of the season came at the expense of the rest of the roster getting saddled with all of the defensive responsibility, and some players did not fare so well under those conditions.

third point Ribeiro does not fit in with either the run and gun system the caps were known for in the past or the tight defensive system that Hunter tried to implement (for obvious reasons). Ribeiro likes to play the old cycle game in the offensive end except he's not that good at it so he mostly relies on his linemates to establish possession. Once again you better find 2 guys that don't mind doing a ton of work.

but yeah in the end Ribeiro can work out for Washington. He's kind of a luxury player in that if you have a beast 1st line and great checking depth you can feed his line the easy matchups and PP time and get great scoring totals out of him. Dallas was not properly equipped to do this in the past nor will they be in the near future, so U don't think they'll miss him all that much if they bring in the right players to take his spot.

can't see Nieuwendyk sticking around too much longer as GM, he's been pretty bad IMO. He is basically running his team into the ground.

He's had some bad moves and some very good moves. Do remember he hasn't been given the money to do whatever he wants until now.

This offseason and the next will define his career as a GM. If he fails, that should be it.

This wasn't a bad move for the Stars.

Sure we could have gotten a bit more trading to the West, but Joe seems to value not trading to conference rivals over getting slightly higher returns. Our prospect depth at C was absolutely abysmal, and we made

What would have been a bad is if Joe let Riberio walk next Summer without restocking our prospect pool.
