Evidently Sam doesn't think he's being shopped if he took the time to welcome Nail yesterday.

It might be easier to deal Omark for another prospect that has fallen out of favour with their current team rather than for a pick so no one adds a contract. Who are some defensemen that fit this description that might be available? Would LA deal Hickey?

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie

EDM looking for D in trade but new coach is next order of business. Brent Sutter or Ralph Krueger seem to be odds-on favorite(s).

So if we were to deal Gagner, would we move Hall to center? I'm not that high on jokinen tbh

With Mact back in the fold as management, they'd probably try Horcoff back in an offensive role again before trying Hall there.

Doubt Jokinen would ever be an option one way or another.

I think you're confusing coaching decisions with management decisions. Playing Hall at C and/or putting Horcoff in an offensive role are the coach's call, not management. A coach isn't going to play Hall at C because MacT tells him to. He'll do it if he thinks it gives him the best chance to win.

Also, Horcoff was only ever used in an offensive role under MacT the year prior to the lockout (when his centers were Horcoff/York/Reasoner/Stoll(rookie)/Oates) and the year following the lockout (Horcoff/Peca/Stoll/Reasoner). Every other year, he was MacT's go-to-guy in defensive zone situations.

If Horcoff plays his usual roll he has played the last 6 or 7 years the oilers are lotto bound again.

I was thinking of that this morning. Absolutely I would. He could play LW on the 4th line. Can stick up for the young guns and can actually play as well (not just an enforcer).

I know Kevin Lowe loves him, I didn't realize he was a UFA. They'll definitely go after Prust imo.

My point was that one of his biggest supporters is back within the organization. If Gagner is moved out, it's less likely that a team already prone to slow reactions regarding holes throughout the roster is going to go out and aquire the nessecary replacement when they've got a guy sitting in one of the executive chairs who thinks Horcoff is/was -at anytime in his career- Olympic quality.

The coach with a choice between non-existent center depth(Belanger etc), non-existent NHL ready prospect depth(Lander etc), Hall who has to learn the position from scratch at the NHL, and career coach's pet Shawn Horcoff - it will be an easy choice for any coach the Oilers get, and they will turn to the experienced, but severely underperforming vet. You're right, coaches will go with what helps them win, but more specificlly - what looks like the safe choice(ie, minimal risk).

Anyone catch the discussion with Tencer & Stauffer of the possible disadvantage of having no coach by free agency day? Thoughts?

We need to get a coach in the next few days, if we plan on courting any free agents.

Another interesting name is Steve Ott. Dallas has him on the trade block. He has 2 more years @ 2.95 M and plays LW. He has put up 35-45 points or so the last 4 years. He is an absolute pest and sticks up for his teammates. Guys hate playing against him and he is a well liked guy in Dallas.

I like Jordan Tootoo.

Plays with good energy and brings some speed which we need in our bottom 6. He can actually play as well (30 points this year). I would prefer him over Prust.

A lot. Prust fights and plays PK, two thinks Teemu doesn't do.

Agreed, and I'd kind of like him, but can he handle the increased role that he would get here or else where, because he still not playing a ton of minutes in NY despite the solid season.

Depends what you pay him, but how big of a role would he really have here?
