Our defensive prospect depth

What do people think of our defensive prospect depth?

Jake Gardiner
Jesse Blacker
Stuart Percy
Korbinian Holzer
Morgan Rielly
Peter Granberg

Not to mention graduates but young defenders like Luke Schenn.

I'd add Tom Nilson to that list ... he's a project, but I'm really excited about that kid.

It's crazy how those 6 guys could probably be a team's 6 dmen (ok maybe Granberg and Holzer not as much) and that team would be well set

Reilly is 1st or 2nd, more potential than Gardiner IMO.

Gardiner, Blacker and Rielly all have fantastic skating ability. Mix that with defensive first guys in Holzer, Schenn and Percy... well...

Really good balance.

I think the key here is patience. If we as fans, and the media to a lesser extent, give Stuart Percy and Morgan Rielly the time and space to develop in the minors, the Leafs could potentially have two really good top three d-men in three or four years.

If we can pick up Schultz, we can definitely afford to send some away for an upgrade up-front.

I'm not 100% sure what to think of overstocking of defensemen in general.

Gardiner {Keeper}
Phaneuf {Captain, sort of have to keep him}
Gunnarsson {Most reliable, but never seemed to have solidified himself in the core}
Liles {Disposable}
Schenn {Disposable}
Holzer {Unproven}
Komisarek {Garbage}
Fraser {Minor leaguer/tweener}
Reilly {Future top 2}
Blacker {Potential top 4 not sure if we'll have room}
Percy {Potential top 4 not sure if we'll have room}
Granberg {Project}
Nilsson {Project}

13 defensemen not counting AHL depth. It will be a real challenge to cull the group and also get value back for the pieces we get rid of.

Do we still go after Schultz?

I dont agree on Scheen you dont dump a guy after a bad half season, 6,3 defenceman 230 pounds who is top of the nhl in hits doesnt come around to often

Yes, yes, and then some more yes. There has never in history been a team to complain "aw - we have too many good players at a certain position, crap!"

It's called leverage ... if we now have to include a Blacker / Percy in a deal to upgrade up front, we can do it without really feeling it.

Yeah that's true enough. I guess the Blues did convert Johnson and Rundblad into other assets, though I'm weary that some of our good prospects will end up getting buried like a Thomas Hickey...

Exactly.

But I am wondering if this pick means they do not expect to sign Schultz or if they made the pick because Gardiner might be moved. I hope not on both fronts but we do have to consider the possibilities.

Pierre deserves some credit; he called the Leafs taking Rielly.

This is what I was thinking as well.

It would be stupid to not at least try to grab Schultz, as we do have a solid chance, but I think Rielly is insurance.

They picked him because he was the best avalaible player at the spot they were picking.

Or Morgan Rielly was simply the BPA at that spot. Don't over think this.
