I would prefer Dumba in the CHL so that as someone stated he can be the C and the focal point of Red Deer

there's only so much developing you can do playing in a league where 90% of the competition is well below your talent level AND at best even with you in experience and the physical development department.

this guy relishes a challenge! they probably won't let him play up in the NHL this season but I think he could do just as well as any number of rookie D from last year.

Yap. About 25 pages too late.

Fargo questioned on the other boards about Europe for Dumba for a season if he doesn't earn a spot with Wild. Make sense to play with men than boys in Red Deer no?

Don't think I've ever even heard of a CHL player leaving his team to go play in Europe for a year because he didn't make the NHL squad and isn't eligible for the AHL yet.

That sounds very counterproductive. Throw an 18 year old kid into a foreign country where he doesn't speak the language of the country and doesn't speak the language of his teammates? Maybe it would be better competition but I can see it easily crushing confidence and not allowing for his leadership qualities to develop.

There's actually a player from this draft who is allegedly doing it though. Trying to remember which one, but I distinctly remember seeing that...

Dumba's going to suddenly attend college at the U of M?

Any player who has played in the CHL is ineligible to play in the NCAA so that is not an option.

If he really wanted to start off a winning tradition in Minnesota he'd do it.

I do too. I just thought it was interesting. Not sure how much more Red Deer can help his progress. I'll take him as a Gopher though. ))

Yes, he'll be in Red Deer. But its not like Minnesota just drops these kids off and doesn't see them again for a while. They're talking weekly, if not bi-weekly. We're tracking progression. Not to mention, after the work with the strength and conditioning coach this summer, they'll have him on a similar program for during the year. Sure, I wish he could be playing better opponents, but at least he'll still be getting the resources and help he needs to develop his body.

But as a Gopher fan I can't help but dream of him in Maroon and Gold.

Probably because its what we watch over here and he's a Gopher fan. I'm the same way. But we do know that the Euro Leagues produces alot of NHL talent, its just what we watch here in MN. (and a handfull of other States).

No knock on the Euro Leagues

I think he's going to be something special for the Wild. Hard hitting great two way defender that scores goals and assists at almost a 0.5PPG. One more year of junior, bulk up a bit, then he could be ready for the pros. Him and Brodin is going to be an awesome pairing. Brodin's defensive play and puck moving with Dumba's offensive nature.

Yep, plus, if he succeeds in the CHL and the NCAA, then he can make it in the NHL. The NCAA is a different game than the CHL, if he can make it in both places, he can do it. These are extreme hypotheticals, these won't happen. And why would he leave his home in NA to go play in Europe? That makes less sense than my already delusional state for him to want to play for the Gophs.

Can we stop talking about CHL players going to play in the NCAA since NCAA bylaws explicitly forbid that from happening?

Forgot to post this on Tuesday but Dan wrote a piece on Dumba in terms of his impact restocking the cupboard.

Been letting this forment a while.

I am backing off the 2 years until the NHL a little for a couple reasons. First of all, we'll see what the Wild does defensively with FA. We might be hurting for veteran leadership. If they really strike out, Gilbert might be our veteran. And in that case, would you rather start with what we have and have to rely on the guys that will be in Houston to come up when guys get injured? Dumba might as well give us a buffer with the Houston D Corps.

Another thing is I know that Yeo is going to love this kid, just like he loves Bulmer. I think that is going to make it harder for Yeo to send him back. I don't think he wanted to send Bulmer back last year, but at least he had a little opportunity for growth. Dumba back to Red Deere just might end up being a lost year for him.

There are so many things to consider that I think its anyones guess what actually happens with him.

I'm thinking they bring him in this year or next, for better or worse.

In UFA, there's Suter, Garrison, and Carle. Those guys are getting $6-8m per. Only three guys, and a lot of teams after them. Detroit's going to get one, Philly's going to get one, and Pittsburgh's going to go hard for one.

If the Wild strike out and can't trade for Paul Martin, we could see Dumba because there's no alternative.

there are camp invitee lists out there somewhere...are we inviting any non-drafted defensemen with any promise?

edit: speaking of Bulmer...i've heard he's ~205 right now. After coming into camp last season at ~180. He has prepared his body.
