I don't see how anyone can be upset by this. They HAD to spend money, and if it doesn't work out, it's only 1 year.

Michael Smith ‏@MSmithCanes
In 469 career NHL games, Semin has 408 points (197g, 211a). He's been a plus player for the last four seasons.

Mike Sundheim ‏@MikeSundheim
Semin is one of 16 NHL players to average 30 or more goals over the past six seasons (31.2 goals per year).

Recent seasons aside, those are some awesome numbers.

Jim Rutherford ‏@HurricanesGM
We did a lot of research about Alexander. Discussions about his fit with our team included coaches, players & staff.

Curious to see how this pans out for you guys. Seems like you have a real nice top6.

Expensive but it's only for a year, good signing.

We were below the cap floor, so I'm not even concerned with the money.

This pleases me.

It's not even that expensive compared to some deals we've seen. It's only a $300k raise.

So what's Justin Faulk's new number? Wouldn't mind seeming him wear 8.

He's the best available player. The most skilled player on the market remaining and with warts and all, he's a player capable of 40 goals. Nobody else we picked up was going to be able to match his upside and even his downside is not horrendous.

Not my favorite player in the league, but if he can come here and change his approach and play a team style game it will go a long way towards changing that perception about him.

Money we had to spend spent wisely on a player who could reap huge dividends.

He's switching to 27.

A potential first line of Staal-Staal-Semin has a combined 1,230 NHL points.

Couldn't be happier.

E. Staal-J. Staal-Semin
Jokinen-Ruutu-Skinner

or any other combination is a hell of a top six.

This is a great signing. For 1 year there is no risk. If he has no chemistry, you lose him. If he meshes great with either Staal, he'll be extended in January IMO.

Top 15 in scoring. You heard it here!

As the 'Canes site says.

"Winger, who has averaged 30 goals in the last six NHL seasons, agrees to a one-year contract with the Hurricanes."

I think with the additions of the younger Staal, a re-energized older Staal, Semin with something to prove and the continued development of some of Carolina's young players, there's no way this team misses the playoffs again.

I'm surprised, but not disappointed. A one-year deal is exactly what this team needs and what Semin needs.

And who knows, maybe after this year, he likes it in Carolina.
