He has to say the right things. If he comes out and says "resign at any cost", there's always the chance the agent might actually call him on it.

He also can't even talk contract technically until July 1st if I understand the CBA correctly (unlikely). Make no mistake he has one drawn up and will start negotiating the second he finds out Parise and Suter have zero interest in signing in Carolina.

Out of desperation, I texted Thunder Bay correspondent/wedding guest @TrippTracy to see if he can pass along word from anyone named Staal.

Maybe we can at least find out whether Tripp had steak or fish.

If Jordan does sign here, does that kill the Parise talk? I'd hope not.. adding Parise would get me excited for the season and it's not like it would kill the cap...

We still have the cap room. Resigning Jordan wouldn't make that untrue. Unless I'm mistaken, we won't be renegotiating the last year of the current deal, we'll be "tacking years on." We'll still have to spend a lot to get to the floor this year.

TBH, as much as we're joking around about it, a 1-year deal with a guy like Whitney or Jagr might be the best option for next year.

So, right now, the teams looks like...

Tlusty- Staal- Larose
Skinner- Staal- Ruutu
Jokinen- Welsh- Bowman
Nodl- Brent- Dwyer
Boychuk- Nash- Stewart
Blanchard- Dalpe- Samson

Pitkanen- McBain
Harrison- Faulk
Gleason- Sanguinneti
Joslin- Murphy

JStaal is the right first step but we still should make some splash and moves. I wonder is there any slim chance to part a ways with Jokinen, Pitkanen and McBain for the right guys who has expierence and can contribute immidiately?

Almost certainly. Skinner and Jordan are going to get big raises in a year, which pretty much rules out signing one of the big names I think.

Still 7 million under the projected floor with only Bowman and Welsh still out there, both of whom could play in the AHL next season.

Gotta sign something hefty just to get in a good position for cap flexibility.

Seriously, bring back Allen, sign Penner, and sign Jagr to a 1 year deal. That's about 10-11 million there.

Penner - E Staal - Jagr
Skinner - J Staal - Ruutu
Tlusty - Jokinen - LaRose
Nodl - Brent - Dwyer
Stewart

Pitkanen - McBain
Faulk - Gleason
Allen - Harrison
Joslin

Needs to be a one-year deal or expiring contract though. Unless we think that the Staal-Staal connection can bring some extra attention and some extra cash.

Or that salary and cap rollbacks from a new CBA will help us financially.

True enough, in which case we just sign no one and watch everyone else scramble to get under the cap/where they need to be.

Jordan won't get 10 years = 60 million, that's for sure! More likely 4-5 years and about 5-5.5 million average.

Skinner will be a $5 million dollar player in one more year, got to plan accordingly.

That's assuming we are always going to be a salary floor team.

Just not wise to assume he can play this year, that's all. We thought he could last year, and he obviously couldn't. What changed? Why should it be different this year? He made absolutely zero progress.

I'll take a hole at #3C over a hole at #2C any day of the week.

Look at the top-2 center combos in the NHL. How many are on a Staal-Staal level? Pittsburgh, LA, Vancouver, San Jose, maybe Philly... anyone else? Think about how much tougher it is to match those teams down the middle than, say, Anaheim.

We paid a fair price for Staal, and our roster got measurably better. Big win for the franchise.

That's a very big price for Jordan Staal. I guess that's what it takes to land a big fish... Still, I'm not thrilled, not overly negative - just confused. I hate losing Sutter, he's one of my favourite players at the moment.

Good post, agreed. Look past the novelty of them having the same name and parents, this is one of the top 1-2 center combos in the league.

If they both play center, that is. I kind of hope they do, honestly. Unless there's some real magical chemistry with the two Staals together, I don't see much reason to move one of them away from his natural position. I know we talk about this Eric Staal at wing thing a lot, but his faceoff game completely turned around last season, he showed the setup man side of him and is good enough defensively to play center. I really don't want him on the wing unless we're looking at a Sedins sort of connection here.

Maybe this means Marc Staal will come here when he's a ufa.

The only way I think they play on the same line is the 1st powerplay. Other than that, they both should stick to being centers

I just can't see us having both Staals on the same line and Jokinen/Brent/Waiver as our other 3 centers. That would be... questionable.
