With Sauer out. Also we have MCD in the system still.

Hey I love drafting DMAN, especially with our gameplan, but I am rather shocked we didn't pick a forward.

I like this pick. Skjei's a great skating d-man.

Dudes, read and understand:

The Hockey News
Skjei isn’t the best defenseman in this year’s draft, but he is close. And he’s undoubtedly the best skater among blueliners available.
“It looks like poetry watching this guy skate,” said one scout. “He’s effortless and massive, which makes him attractive. He sometimes makes some shaky decisions, but his skating ability for his size is frightening.”
Although his numbers with the U.S. under-18 team didn’t reflect it, Skjei has decent offensive ability, a trait he’ll likely display more next season at the University of Minnesota.
He already has size, though scouts would like to see him use it more to his advantage when it comes to playing a physical game. He has improved in that department, but it’s clear that will never be a dominant part of his game.
“When somebody gets him at the next level and tells him, ‘just be simple and go with your skating stride,’ he’ll be a real effective NHLer,” said another scout.

Dubinsky had to be part of that package to Pittsburgh. He was the Sutter of the package.

Likes: American, best player on board, trust Clarke!!

We most likely will be trading for a top 3-6 forward people, this most likely will deplete our D prospects. This gives us insurance.

Solid pick. Not the sexy pick some people would have wanted. But confident he will pan out.

Yes, because clearly by the time Collberg or Aberg are NHL ready, we will have the same exact roster. We should go back to the days of drafting for positions we need right now because it landed us gems like Al Montoya.

The defenseman they could potentially trade isn't necessarily going to be one on the roster currently. But if they deal a defenseman from the prospect ranks, it's never bad to have more on the way.

As I have posted a few times, would have rather they traded down. No offence to the kid, I hope he pans out. I guess they want to play 82 1-0 games (or however many games they'll play next season).

Starting to feel better about this pick. Maybe they think Schultz isn't signing with them, if not, Skjei can add depth down the road.

My thought exactly. Otherwise that pick makes no sense... we're stacked on D. Especially on LH d-men. McD, MDZ, Staal, Erixon, Skjei.

Staal/MDZ getting dealt for Nash or Ryan maybe?

Yep, exactly. This is a ****ing awesome pick. The reaction on this board is utterly laughable and, as mentioned, is the exact same reaction as when we picked Stepan. I was so happy when we picked Stepan and the board nearly took a ****. I mean, give me a break. This team goes and picks BPA. Period. We are not going to address need. We will take who we feel is the best available player.

This kid has McDonagh-esque upside. He's not going to be as strong of a kid (McDonagh is just built like an OX), but he has similar speed, great hockey sense, and really nice two-way play.
