2012 NHL Draft Profile: Matt Grzelcyk

Quote:
With smaller frames under 6-feet, both players understand that they must maximize their core strength to be able to better handle the bigger, stronger and more physical players at the higher levels.

Working in Grzelcyk’s favor, however, is the fact that he skates extremely well, with an explosive first few steps and smooth footwork. If he lacks natural size and strength, he offsets those shortcomings with a brilliant mind for the game, a deft passing touch and the heart and character to bring his best effort to the ice on every shift.

“The first thing is that I try to establish myself as a two-way ‘D’,” Grzelcyk said. “When you look at my size, it has to be about offense, Hockey IQ and smarts. I’m not going to be a physical guy, so I have to be able to move the puck out of my end smartly and help my team transition to offense smoothly.”

The future BU Terrier added that the biggest improvement to his game this season had to do with his timing in terms of jumping up on the rush and pinching in from the point. He’s also worked on adding power and accuracy to his shot.
...oh, and his dad was a member of the Bull Gang for 40 years.

I`m sure if they take 200 or 300 of these pint sized defensemen that eventually one will work out.

Marty St Louis was not rated by the NHL’s Central Scouting Service... so your point is?

Funny thing is if he was rated #45 by CS people would love the pick.. it's all about the ranking.. lets be honest no one on here including myself have seen these guess nearly enough to come to a proper judgement call on the pick.

This doesn't make sense. If he was bigger, he'd be ranked higher. People are just concerned about the height.

which i think is pretty fair. i have nothing against the pick but i am kind of getting annoyed with PC's obsession with these under sized defensemen. especially considering the success we have with bigger defensemen currently on our roster.

Kirk Luedeke ‏@kluedeke29

Can't say enough about Matt Grzelcyk- don't let his size fool you- kid can flat- out play

I'll take Kirk's word over some of you "scouts".

He`d be a fine risk in the 6 or 7`th round, but going off the boards for a guy who is likely to be around in another 100 picks is just bad drafting no matter what.

Unless it's part of his Providence rebuilding plan

I jokingly say "Don Sweeney and the Harvard club".

Or 'they need guys who make Dougie look even bigger."

More seriously, if he is good enough for Jack Parker, good enough for me.

Also...Gator Mike noted:
...oh, and his dad was a member of the Bull Gang for 40 years.

Welcome Matt Grzelcyk.
May you someday hoist the Cup in Boston and hand it to your father.
