Montreal definitely got the names. We'll see if it works out.

Aside from Dumba, the Wild seem to grab a lot of long-term project guys. Maybe that's because they figured there wont' be room for those in Houston for at least 3 years?

I'm glad there weren't any trades. We need to keep roster players, and build through the draft.

Nice observation. I wouldn't expect Draeger or Gilmour or Nanne for at least 4 years if they are going the college route with a year of Juniors beforehand. The 6'4'' Swede seems like a bit of a project as well.

I wouldn't call Bussieres a long term project. He'll be in Houston in 2013-2014. Also wouldn't necessarily call the Swedish overager that long term of a project either.

Yea, but league wide even. Thought there would be some movement.

Bussieres is totally the guy you allow to learn to dominate in junior, then dominate in the AHL, then bring into the NHL at 23 or 24 as a full-grown, fully-developed power forward.

A single blockbuster which involved 2 of those guys. Two meh early trades involving another two, then a whole bunch of "who cares" trades.

Were there any pick for pick trades at all?

Edit: Looked at the Trade Tracker and there were 6. Only one was before the third round.

Edit 2: In 2012 there were 13 trades around the draft. For comparison, in 2011 there were 20, more than 150% of this year's total.

I thought Staal, Visnovsky, and Ribeiro were surprising.

The Bobrovsky trade could become interesting in the future, depending on how successful/unsuccessful Bobrovsky becomes.

Calgary traded down. That's the only important pick-for-pick trade.

I think everyone just wanted to pick the guys that they wanted to pick this year. I'm all for it with the Wild. I'm pumped about this draft because of Dumba, he was the absolute best guy we could've taken at #7 IMO. I remember I wanted him when we were sitting at #4 in the standings at the end of the year.

The later picks I know little about, but Bussieres is a type of prospect that we've been lacking in the system. I just hope he can put it all together. He should hopefully dominate the Q next year.

To put it another way, this year's Draft finished before noon. Last year's Draft didn't finish until just after 1.

Our day 2 North American skaters were generally off-the-board picks. I don't like passing up real names. They seem to work out (Larsson, Zucker, Haula, etc.).

Any of you draft experts know why Cody Corbett went undrafted? He was talked about as potentially going as high as the 2nd round.

Some players who weren't drafted:

From CSS

Dane Fox (46)
Max Iafrate (70)
Devin Tringale (79)
Jean Auren (4th Euro Goalie)

That Dane Fox put up 54 points in 62 games as a defenseman, but he was +12 with London, then finished -25 in 28 games with Erie. I'm really surprised he wasn't drafted. Some had him ranked as high as the 2nd round.

I asked Russo if he had heard anything about camp invites. I hope we see one of the above at camp.

I was sort of surprised to see this as well. Seeing as how he's local (and will likely be around - thus less travel), hopefully they'll bring him into camp and see how he plays, maybe get him signed to a contract right there.

I sort of wonder that if he wouldn't have bolted to the CHL if he would have been drafted. Likely would have been seen as one of the better Minnesota high schoolers in the draft, in my opinion. He may have suffered an injury towards the end of the year as I didn't see him on the ice when I watched the Oil Kings in the playoffs... Or he may have just played his way out of the line-up.

Add Joonas Donskoi there (-92 redraftee). I'd be all for signing him as FA, but don't think GMCF wants another forward contract, or contract for that matter unless he really likes the kid. He didn't sign with FLA cos they wanted him to AHL with 50k paycheck, so I doubt we're interested at all.

I have to say congratulations to FC (and I know two of you guys are here) on their September rankings correctly predicting the first 3 picks of the 2012 draft. By my count they had something like 6 other players who were ranked 1 or fewer spots from their actual draft position.
