Really confused about the return on some of the players today. Staal trade looks great compared to the salary cap dumps of Michalek, Visnovsky and Ribeiro.

Yohe says that Ruopp is a "big-time" prospect.

Honestly I have no idea, but he played 62 games for Prince Albert this year, had 9 points, and 127 PIMS so he's obviously a physical DMan. He also was a -23 for what it's worth, not sure what to make of that. But we'll see I guess.

Also FWIW, Ruopp is a 5.0 on HF.

So much for good D-men being worth top six wingers

Anybody got any info on Ruopp? - Nevermind, he kinda sucks

I think people are hopeful now that we have cap space.

Sid + Parise = I just went from 6 to midnight

I'll really miss Z. He was so nice on the flight two weeks ago!

By Michalek do you mean Martin?

Please?

Suter and Parise, we need you.

So right now our defense looks like:

Orpik - Letang
Martin - Niskanen
Despres/Strait - Engelland

Right?

Say hello, Parise or Suter.

This also suggests trading Martin may not be so easy, perhaps.
Yep.

Shero HAS to have something brewing...only reason that could explain this relatively pedestrian return for a solid d-man.

If Shero finds a way to get Shea Weber, my bowels will implode

If Stall is to be resigned for 6 million, then Pens would have been in a poor position for salary flexibility. They now have 6 million more cap room to go after a forward. Mechalek is not a loss that can;t be overcome. Now if they can move Martin to Minny for a bag of pucks, then two forwards or a trade can be made for a forward.

Don't get this one from Shero. Guess Martin was hard to move

Don't know that anyone is suggesting that we have a better chance. With our newfound cap space and the talent we can offer to srround him, we easily have an equal chance, and there's no doubt about that.

I think HFBoards members were looking at Michalek through rose-colored glasses this past year and I believe that he was actually worse than Martin on the whole even though Martin's gaffes were more obvious when they happened.
Michalek was not very good last year. I don't know if it was hip related or what but he was supposed to be one of our more physical defensemen and he was not. He seemed to be less mobile and less physical all year to my eyes. This trade return probably reflects the new reality of his skills along with an admission that Shero needs to toughen up the defense.

All I know is that Shero better make some noise come July 1, because as it stands now, the Penguins are a worse team than they were on June 21st.

So wait...the Pens spend 4.5 on a guy and get this in return.

And Martin is still a Penguin.

Better make up for it July 1st Ray.

You kind of get the impression after all Parise talk that maybe Shero has some idea that he had to clear some cap room before July1. At least I am hoping that is what this means. Because all in all this was not a good move taken by itself no matter how you look at it.

So the Penguins freed up what, 6 million in cap space today? Encouraging.

CapGeek ‏@capgeek
The #NHL #Penguins are now down to $55.3m in cap payroll with 18 players signed -- $14.6m under temporary cap.

NJ has financial concerns, so Parise will not sign there. He wants to win and have contract stability. I think the two teams he would like to play for are Pens and Detroit as they meet his talent.

Who on earth convinced you Michalek was a physical defenseman?!? That has never been his calling card. Never.

Remember Sid signs an extension that also eats into the cap.
