I would have preferred to dump Martin, but you have to find a taker. Martin might not be tradeable until he improves his own value with stronger play, maybe mid-season. Michalek has a more favorable cap hit, had a better season (arguably), and Phoenix is familiar with him. It was an easier salary to dump.
Martin seemed pretty motivated to redeem himself as well. I said that whatever team that he ends up on will consider him to be a bargain and be very happy with him next year. That team might be the Pens.
On the other hand would not be surprised to see Martin gone as well. But my God, what a roll of the dice completely changing a team fundimentally like that.
Remember Sid signs an extension that also eats into the cap.
Roughly the difference from Lovejoy to Despres, if the rumors are correct.
Ruopp is definitely sandpaper and nails...this board should love him, though he's obviously nothing more than a role player. Cheverie is nothing more than a replacement for Modig in the system. The third has...well...third round value.
Harsh reality on Michalek's value here.
“The most terrifying fact about the universe is not that it is hostile, but that it is indifferent. If we can come to terms with this indifference and accept the challenges of life within the boundaries of death, our existence as a species can have genuine meaning and fulfillment. However vast the darkness, we must supply our own light.” - Stanley Kubrick
i firmly believe there is still a chance martin gets dumped... you might take back bad salary (overpriced winger) the other way or you may have to give a good asset along with him but I wouldn't be shocked. Just because Z moved doesn't mean Martin can't be. I for one like the moves today because it allows the pens to be more flexible to fill needs.
Z was just average in my book and since we got him in FA i don't care. we can sign a gill or something in free agency if need be. no big loss here, but yeah i would prefer dumping martin. i am starting to think we are stuck with martin
He may not be a hitter but he's certainly physical in the regard that he's supposed to be strong on the puck carrier and in front of/behind the net. He didn't do that at all this year.
Again, where did you get that? His entire career, Michalek was always much more likely to try and block a shot than knock a guy on his ass when he was in front of the net. He has the size that he shouldn't be manhandled one-on-one in thecrease, but that hardly classifies him as a "physical" defenseman.
That's it in a nutshell, i agree. We need cap space for free agency and roster spots for defenseman in the A who are NHL-ready.
I love Z's game, but if it gets us a spot for Despres and a Parise signing, he won't be missed for a SECOND.
I'd rather move Martin than Michalek, obviously, but Michalek was almost just as bad as Martin was this past season...he just escaped much of the criticism because his contract didn't remind people quite so much of a gigantic white sea-bound bird.
This saves us from losing one of the kids to waivers and likely gets Despres into the line-up, while making Parise a very real possibility.
Now if we fail to sign Parise things become less awesome...but if we can get him then **** Zbynek and hello Zach and Simon.
Also it should be worth noting that trading Michalek doesn't count trading Martin out of the equation...it just means that Phoenix was willing to deal now, before free agency begins. My expectation for dealing Martin is a mid/late July deal that involves a 2013 2nd rounder coming back our way. I don't think there were many people here expecting him to be moved for a pick in this draft, and any deal involving Martin was almost guaranteed to be strictly for futures.
I can't state enough how weird it is that we're going to have 9 draft picks...7 of which are set to take place before our first pick in the 2008 Draft.
