Pittsburgh's defense was a mess.. They traded one of their better defenseman for peanuts and are probably going to trade Martin for the same amount in hopes to sign Suter and then have prospect step up

Well, it seems Jet fans will never get over their blind hate for Phoenix. He didn't bolt, and he never said he didn't want to be here. He actually said he wanted to stay, but the uncertainty made him choose Pitt.

Good call, though.

I think with this move, it may mean Yandle will be traded. Its a position of strength for them anyways and Phoenix is weak up front.

Don't like this deal...I was fine with the other trade and picks until this one though.

I kind of wish it was Goncharov going to pitts. I want that guy to get a shot with someone as he obviously isn't gonna get one behind our depth.

If the sole purpose of this trade is to make cap space....why not wait till you have Suter/Parise whatever??? The already have a decent amount of space, and if they wait till July first can't they go over the cap?? Or if they acquire the rights, and agree (in principle) then move Z?? Its not like you can get low-balled even more.....

Reading this thread makes me think Pens just traded a prime Adam Foote or something. Michalek is an okay 2nd pairing defensman at this point in his career and the difference between him and guys like Despres/Bortuzzo/Strait is negligible, and take that plus whatever the Pens do with the massive cap space they are opening it and the trade works well for them. It's like people forget there's a salary cap now.

Stupid non-hockey trade. Pens could have signed Parise and Suter without having to trade Z.Michalek at this point in time. They didn't up their chances of signing Parise/Suter at all while losing Z for practically nothing.

Question for pens fans, while looking at the prospect list for the pens, I noticed that Bortuzzo is a defenseman.. Didn't he play forward for some games this year?

Did anyone love how Pierre pointed out that Parise and Crosby played for Shattuck, therefore there's a connection.

Its like saying you moved out of a city in 2008 and someone moved into in 2009 and asking if you ever met them. They played different years.

I can understand trying to open cap-room for something major, and we did need to trade away D in any case.

But this return is just pathetic. I'd be surprised if any of the assets we just acquired ever plays in the NHL, and Michalek was our best PK'er and one of the few who could hold his head high after the last two playoffs as he individually did well on a sieve of a D.

This is completely bizarre to me looking at Shero's past deals. ****!

Lets call it what it is a cap dump. Too many younger cheaper players & he underperformed in the playoffs. Shero said he had too many D-men now with Lovejoy probably waived this gives us 7 & some cap room.

Z was not very good last year. Look at his blocked shots totals. He was a shot blocking machine and stupid Bylsma has him poke checking. I was not unhappy with Z, but he is not a top two D maybe a four. Pens have to make cap room and promote some younger D. Salary dump with a purpose. Getting Parise with Sid makes Z cap room necessary. Remember Sid gets a new deal that takes more cap room.

remember that at that time it was believed that the Coyotes were headed to Winnipeg. It sounds like he didn't want to play in Manitoba, had nothing to do with the Coyotes.

Bortuzzo has never played forward to my knowledge. Engelland did but I think Bortz has played D even while in the OHL.

No, he is strictly a defenseman. Maybe confusing him with Tangradi?

Did you actually watch him play? I'm not sure if you are serious. Z is a great defensive defenseman -- in the Coyotes system, it is going to be a ***** to play against him.

Pretty weird trade by Pittsburgh to be honest.

Michalek might not be a superstar, but he's a guy that can play 20 minutes a night and he blocks of shots.

Find it very hard to believe they couldn't have gotten a better return.
