Why do they always play 90's (and to some extent) 80's music to open hockey games

It was cool back then, but when you hear "Are you ready for this" "twilight zone" and "everybody clap your hands" before EVERY single game, period and most timeouts, it makes me wonder why they haven't kept up with the times so much? It's like they have the full collection of "jock jams" and prefer that most of the time.

Everything else in the game seems to have been modernized. I know the sound guy also plays newer songs too, don't get me wrong... but I just get the feeling that not much effort has gone into the aesthetics of actually being at the game.

Yes it's offseason. Yes it's a slow day at work today. Yes, I care.

Anyone else notice the stale selection of songs while being at the games?

I think it may just be Philly. I hear Rocky V just got released out there.
I hear the old stuff once in a while but I also hear a lot of the recent top 40 tracks as well (Same rotational annoying ones at least)

Why do "they" play any loud music at all? Why not allow the natural atmosphere of the game, and the fans' excitement be the only noise? Everything else, is far too artificial.

it's not exclusive to philly. it happened in detroit when I was here, in columbus, washington, hartford, and new york at the games I've been to in the last year.

Nostalgic value?

They play lots of top 40 whenever I go to games in between plays and whatnot.

Pretty much this.

Also people of all ages go to games. You want to play music that most people will recognize. If you play Halestorm at a game a lot of people are going to wonder what the name of the crappy band they are listening to is and have an awkward experience. It's best to just stick to music people know. Although I didn't have a problem when they would play Bad Religion or something in the Igloo during the playoffs, that isn't everybodys music. So I understand why they stick to songs everybody knows and can listen to most nights.

Agreed.

That, and a lot of modern popular music is a little too suggestive for the family environment a professional hockey game tries to maintain.

Todays music sucks. Would you rather listen to Metallica or Justin Bieber? ACDC or Lady Gaga?

If you chose the later to either of these questions,

Probably the person playing the music enjoys that type of music and Rush kicks ass.

While I don't like a lot of modern music, I try not to have the attitude of "Today's music sucks" because that's something every generation says. For example, a lot of people have been pining for the 80's score fests, but I'm certain people that were fans back in the 60's said, "Hockey today is terrible" during the 80's.

2 bad examples. Justin Bieber is listened to by 99% girls and Lady Gaga is probably 70%.

Theres a lot of songs that I'd rather listen to than the majourity of Metallica and to a lesser extent ACDC. I would prefer rock from the 90's over both though.

I was thinking the exact same thing. A more fitting comparison would be Backstreet Boys v Justin Bieber; Madonna v Lady Gaga. AC/DC and Metallica are in a completely different league. Just wanted to chime in.
