ELITE PROSPECTS NUMBERS

John Draeger’s been a rock for the same Shattuck squad that Zach Stepan plays for. The rugged 6’2" defenseman will likely play a more stay-at-home role at the next level, but makes life difficult for the opposition. His skating has improved as the season has gone on, and will likely play a year of junior before heading to East Lansing and the Michigan State Spartans

Draeger plays a shutdown defense using his long reach to interrupt offensive opportunities. He does a good job forcing opposing players to the outside, limiting their effectiveness. Draeger has shown major improvement in his offensive game as he’s becoming more of an offensive threat, but this is still an area than needs some work.

Overall Draeger is going to continue to get stronger as he grows into his large frame and he already has the tools to be a complete player. Draeger has a very high progression ceiling and with continued experience he’s a major sleeper for the 2012 NHL Draft next June.

The top defenseman on Shattuck, Draeger is a physical blueliner known for his reach and quick feet. He can punish with his 6-foot-2, 186-pound frame, but also showed some nice touch against Milwaukee, scoring on a beautiful penalty shot move.

“I like to be that all-around player,” Draeger said. “Help out the team offensively, defensively…be that guy who shows the younger guys the way and help them out.”

Though Shattuck draws players from around the world, Draeger is from Faribault, the Minnesota home of the prep school. Needless to say, having neighbors such as Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews was a great influence and the dorm experience provided by the school has lived up to expectations.

“It’s great,” Draeger said. “You get to know everybody. You bond with the guys by living together, going to dinner together. You get to be a better team.”

The big blueliner is committed Michigan State, where he’ll reunite with Shattuck alum Tanner Sorenson. And while Chicago’s Duncan Keith was a Spartan, Draeger actually looks up to his partner.

“Brent Seabrook, for sure,” he said. “He’s a big, lanky guy. He’s physical and can bury the puck and I think I play a lot like him.”

No doubt MSU would love for that to come true. Draft eligible in 2012.

He's a defender from Edina and has played a few years at Shattuck.

52 points in 111 games over the last two years.

Gotta show the jump in points. In the two years he had close to the same amount of games. 2 years ago he had 11 points. This past year he had 41 points in 57 games. Pretty good for a D.

Don't believe so. Picked 68th through the 3rd, at this point, rankings mean squat. (maybe not squat but hold very little importance compared to the 1st)

Minnesota goes by no draft rankings but their own. Dan's seen him a few times and commented on the number of Wild guys at Shattucks before so now we know why.

Take that ranking with a grain of salt....Being that is a local kid, the Wild probably scouted him a lot heavier than others, thus know more about him than whoever puts the rankings together.

That bolded part seals the pick.

Sounds like a typical Flahr/Fletch pick and he's a token Minnesotan.

We should get a chance to see him play once the new Big 10 hockey conference gets rolling.

Sounds like a pretty solid defenseman.

Good stuff. I really like Fletch and Flahr's drafting flair
