I had Altshuller rated 36th from the OHL this year.
It was a tough year for Altshuller and the Generals. After backstopping Canada to Gold at the Ivan Hlinka, he came into the OHL with a lot of hype and the expectation that he would lead the Generals to the top of the Eastern Conference. Unfortunately, Altshuller battled consistency issues all season long and eventually lost his starting job to Kevin Baillie. That isn't to say that people have given up on him though. In fact, after replacing Baillie in the playoffs, I thought Altshuller played fantastic against the IceDogs and kept his team in a few games they had no business in being in. He's raw in every sense of the word, but he's got great size and athleticism in the net and appears to have a lot to work with. He'll need to improve his positioning and ability to harness rebounds. I found that he can be particularly beatable down low and in the five hole once you get him moving. But as this year's playoffs showed, it's too early to give up on his potential.
Just as we suspected, a big reach in the 3rd. Should've taken Maidens. Our 4th rounders were solid though.
I remember the general tenor of the board being quite unhappy with Boychuck.
Actually, this board was pretty pleased with the Boychuk pick. IIRC, some of the other boards I visited were the polar opposite though. Most of the posters here were very happy with the pick. A few posters had questions and/or didn't like the pick, but overall it was positive.
With Murphy and Andersen gone, our G prospect ranks look pretty soft. Anyone have any word on Matt Mahalak's development/potential?
No idea on his potential, but he had a pretty damn good season last year. He was good enough to get Plymouth to platoon him with Wedgewood (Canada's WJC goalie) and actually put up better stats then Wedgewood. He's a lock to be the Whalers #1 next season baring a trade.
How about points for Dave G saying AJ Jenks and Jared Staal were potential 2nd/3rd round targets of the Canes. He wasn't right then, but eventually both ended up as Canes.
Most wanted Teubert but he was already picked. He hasn't been any more successful than Boychuk. I also like the post about wanting Buffalo to take Myers so that our forwards can skate circles around him.
I definitely looked foolish on Myers, but I just frankly never saw the hype for the guy. Seemed like he lacked any kind of hockey sense to me, but obviously that wasn't the case.
In fairness, all of us have been wrong at one point or another in our assessment of picks. The thing is, guys like you (and a few others) have more insight to a lot of draftees and thus put your opinions out there a lot more than the rest of us, so you're going to have more chances to be wrong than I would.

Altshuller is gonna be a good pick. He is extremely raw, extremely big and extremely dedicated and very hard-working. I know Ottawa was going to pick him 76th if he was still available. He will be a player for Carolina one day. Really good guy as well, I think he could end up being a real steal.
