That was my bad, I thought he was a center but indeed he is a LW. Hopefully him slipping in the draft was a mistake on behalf of the other teams.

Awesome interview. Honestly, I've been pretty dubious about his statements. Just seems like he's simply saying what he is supposed to say. By this interview, though, sounds like he truly is committed to NA hockey, though we'll see how he feels after a few years of junior and AHL play. Exciting to hear that a player with that much skill wants to be 220lbs!

Yep... he's a big boy with good hands... if he keeps on developing and gets even bigger... the Oilers could have a very good power forward on their hands.

The big question I'll hope we'll see a positive answer for in 12/13 regarding Zharkov will be: Can his hockey sense catch up to his obvious talent?

He's got all the tools (size, speed, hands, good attitude), but the main reason I've seen as to why his point totals in his draft year were so pedestrian on an admittedly mediocre team is that he's not yet figured out how to turn all that talent into offensive production...he's still trying to find his way on the ice.

If he can develop that though, look out. He will be VERY dangerous.

Crossing my fingers that he won't be another Martindale, i.e. looks good rushing the puck and does some pretty things in the offensive zone, but it doesn't turn into actual goals and assists often enough.

I wouldn't compare him to martindale. I'm pretty sure martindale's main issue was his attitude, which Zharkov does not have.

I thought I was straightforward when I was comparing him to Martindale only in terms of how their obvious talent with the puck didn't always translate to goals and assists...NOT anything to do with attitude. I mean, in the same post I'd already lauded Zharkov for having a good attitude.

I was thinking back to this year's trainging camp when a lot of fans were commenting on how good Martindale looked during scrimmages and even some of the preseason games, but it seemed to me that it never actually turned into anything more than that, he never actually produced that much.

I'm just hoping that Zharkov can turn his talent into production, that's all.

It would be really nice if he develops into a 2nd line LW or even C. Having a skilled guy that size in our top 6 would be really nice. I watched him one day and I would say he has a little nasty to him also.
Hall, RNH, Eberle, Zharkov, PRV, and Yak would be some nice skill and size combo, it is at least 2 yrs away I would say maybe even 2.

I wouldn't be surprised if Edmonton tried it, either. Crazy, but it wouldn't surprise me because we've got more wingers with higher upside.

Hartikainen-Paajarvi-Pitlick ... come on, tell me that wouldn't be an uber cool AHL line.

If all 3 of those guys met their full potential that would be a respectable scoring second line which would beat you senseless every shift.
you think they will try Paajarvi at center? crazy!!

Paajarvi is a top 6 player in the near future.

the third line should be

Hamilton/Hartikaien-Lander-Pitlick <---a line that will run you down or shut you down.

Adorable. Glad they have become good friends now and I hope Zharkov's competition with Yakupov will result in him playing for the Oilers sooner rather than later.

one thing i have loved is that the russian kids are posting pictures all over twitter of them but in every picture one of them is wearign oilers gear. It just shows that they are excited and proud of the team they are on. Team players are the ones you want to grow with. its really hard not to be excited about our future.

Just curious if anyone seen this kid. Sergey Kuptsov. A teammate of Zharkov.
6'2" already 212 lbs and can play any forward positions.
Is he good enough to be pick with the Oilers 2nd?

6p in 12 games on a team with next to no talent.

Without their goaltending, they'd be lucky to have a single win.

Surprized to see this thread get bumped with no mention that Zharkov was selected to play in the Subway Super Series. Good on him and happy for us to have a chance to get a good look at him.

Yeah and he will get to play with his buddy Nail too.

Louis Jean ‏@LouisJean_TVA

Nail Yakupov will play for team Russia in the Subway Super Series. He is slated to play all 6 games.

Since I've already stated his info, this is the only video I could find of him to show who I was referring to. Just learned about him today on yahoo sports that he was Zharkov's teammate on Belleville and U-18. Maybe he's under the Oilers radar. Maybe we can draft him with Anaheim's pick if he's deemed worthy or within our reach.

Also if anyone knows about Sergey Kuptsov could shed some light, would be wonderful.
