46. For a while now it's been assumed that if 2010 first-round pick Kevin Hayes decides not to sign in Chicago, his first choice would be Florida. That's where his brother Jimmy plays. There are rumblings, though, that the Panthers may choose not to go this route. That makes the favourites Boston (where he went to school) or Pittsburgh (Tom Fitzgerald is a cousin). If he does not sign with the Blackhawks by Aug. 15, he will be a free agent.

I guess that could work. Don't know if we could work in other points other than the horn. Be more like sword battling.

At the Ibex that was brought up could work. Locking horns in front of the net.

To go along with the horn bit; As I said in my original post, he goes into tough areas blind of fear. Rhino's can't see well, but they'll truck in there anyways.

I have heard us being in the running for players like Parise, etc in the past, and we rarely come out on top. I am not getting my hopes up.

We should be a very attractive destination for the guy anyways, nothing but opportunity on the top lines. We only have two legit top 6 wingers, and one of them is 34. Come here and play reasonably well, and he could be playing with Crosby and Malkin as soon as this year, and definitely within his ELC. The man would cash out at the end of that. It can't be a money thing, there's a hard cap on his contract anyways.

So where would Hayes rank in terms of our forwards for next year? Know nothin about him except he's big and fast.

honestly, I'd put him just above Bennett. So what would that make him, 4th/5th, depending on your criteria/who you ask?

EDIT: 4th/5th in terms of wings. Not just forwards

Him wanting to play in the NHL vs AHL is likely a money thing. 90k in the AHL, 900k plus bonuses in the NHL. Although teams can agree to pay him more then the typical 10-15% if he's in the AHL.

Another tidbit from the same 54 (30) Thoughts:

14. Christian Ehrhoff surprised by taking one year in Pittsburgh, but no one would be stunned if he's extended not long after Jan. 1. That's when he's eligible to do it.

It would be nice to land a good wing prospect like Hayes. God knows our prospect pool could use it. I'm not holding my breath though. The cousin connection with Fitzgerald makes Pittsburgh a logical guess for someone guessing but it's likely just a guess.

And I believe Pittsburgh could legitimately offer him a chance at cracking the opening day roster. Whether he can make the team over guys like Payerl, Sill, Megna or even Comeau (who are all bottom 6 players) would be on him.

I also don't think being on the 3rd or 4th line would be a terrible thing. With guys like Dupuis, Bennett, Downie, Sutter, Spaling, Goc etc the bottom 2 lines aren't going to be how they were. I think they are at least going to contribute in the offensive zone while giving good d. Add Crosby or Malkin double shifting every now and then, and it should make for a way more balanced offence

Definitely. We only have 12 forwards signed (Assuming Sutter and Spaling get signed). JR said he's keeping in mind that a kid like Kapanen could make the team. I doubt he will but if that spot is up for grabs for Kap, it could certainly be up for grabs to Hayes if he should sign here.

I really hope JR is dangling Sutter out there to get a top-6 LW. Even a guy like McGinn or Tlusty would be nice to have in our top-6. Dupuis in the top-6 would be very bad to start the season with IMO.
