Nelson will be playing under a new coach next season in Victoria, as Marc Habscheid will be relinquishing his responsibilities with the hockey team to take on an executive role with GSL Holdings Ltd., which is the owner's company.

Victoria Royals thrilled about NHL draft selections:
Quote:
“Growing up I always liked Buffalo and Philly,” says now-Sabre prospect Nelson. “It’s kind of funny how it happened, but I’m definitely excited. I couldn’t be happier with the team that took me.”
Quote:
The two players are currently preparing for their respective new teams’ prospect camps. Nelson’s prospect camp will include a reunion with former Royals star veteran forward Kevin Sundher, who mentored Nelson last year in his rookie season.

“[Sundher] took me under his wing and we all looked up to him,” says Nelson. “It’s going to be good, we get along really good. Hopefully we get to be teammates some day.”
Quote:
“It should be a good fit,” says Nelson. “Buffalo has got some bigger guys who play the body and play fast. I’m hoping to go in there and get my name out and make a good impression, and let them know I’m the real deal.”

He's big, he's physical, he can score and he's got a good work ethic.

Why'd he fall to the 5th round?

Second year of draft eligibility and 19 years old.

Victoria filled their coaching vacancy last week; Nelson will be coached by Dave Lowry this upcoming season:
Quote:
The Victoria Royals came up with a great hire in naming Dave Lowry as head coach at a media gathering on Thursday morning, confirming a Times Colonist story in today’s sheet.

Lowry told me a couple of weeks back that he was interested in the position and even brought the story up at the press conference.

The 19-year NHL veteran, who had stops in Vancouver, St. Louis, Florida, San Jose, and Calgary, experienced an incredible year in his one full season as head coach with the WHL’s Calgary Hitmen in 2008-09, rolling off an impressive 59-9-0-4 record before losing the league final to Kelowna.

“We are very excited to have Dave join our team,” Royals’ owner Graham Lee said in the team’s news release. “Our goal for the Royals organization is to create an environment for players to succeed. Dave brings experience and a winning track record at the WHL level that will help us achieve our goal.”

Hard to argue that one and no one is going to take up that challenge with Lowry, a hard-nosed 47-year-old who played with a cause and reckless abandon.

Having a coach who knows about the physical aspects of the game should be good for Nelson. So too was Lowry's attention to the defensive side of the ice.

Nelson's got a 6-game goal scoring streak going. Any chance they sign this guy if he keeps scoring? Prospects for playing for Rochester? I'm not good at judging a 20-year old playing in the W

He impressed me at prospect camp last year so I am assuming he has improved since.

He and Locke both are showing well for possible pro contracts for next summer.

I'd be surprised if he didn't get a contract at the end of this year.

Depending on how his year finishes, I think he signs a PTO with the Amerks once his Victoria season is over. Depending on how he plays garners whether or not he gets a pro contract. Similar to Jacobs
