People on the main board think this is a good pick, I know nothing about him though...

For what it's worth, Pronman ranked this guy 44th overall in his draft rankings.

From his article:

Quote:
Gavrus is yet another case of a relatively obscure prospect transferring to the CHL establishing a more legitimate stock for himself. Playing on a team with potential top-50 picks who are bigger names in the likes of Jarrod Maidens and Gemel Smith, Gavrus has looked equally impressive. Gavrus is a high-end skater with a pretty smooth technique and gets up to a tremendous top speed. He gets up to top speed very quickly, and also is very good at rapidly changing gears. He's a pretty skilled puck-handler whose main puck possession skill comes from his individual ability. He can make plays to others, but aside from his skating, the bulk of his offense will come from his puck abilities. Gavrus is a small forward with a pretty slight frame, but he still works hard on the forecheck and has some grit to his game. He doesn't necessarily carry that over to the other end, though, but considering his intangible base, I could see that improving during the course of his development.

Interesting description. Sounds like we took a flier on a project pick. Lots of skill, and a bit of grit, but not much size.

Didn't know the name until the pick but seems like a really good player. It's complementary to the grit and grind lunchpail players we took earlier. Sounds like he has wheels, works hard, and great hands. Brendan Morrison or something like that? Rated very high and VERY shocked he was around at 180. He's rated as late 2nd round talent and we got him at the very end of the 6th. You can't argue with that.

5'10" isn't that small either. Zach was 5'11" when we drafted him and isn't any taller now

Height is not as important as body type.

No idea what all the borderline homoerotic for height is all about. This isn't basketball. There's not that much of a difference between a few inches of height on the rink...

Yeah obviously pronman is just another source, but I like his emphasis on possession skills and hockey sense. He may be a bit hard line on his skill first attitude sometimes, but he doesn't have a massive size fetish like many others.

Eric Gelinas and Dainius Zubrus are the same height, one is lanky and awkward and the other is built like a god damn freight train.

Yep, sounds like the Scarlett pick from last year. They didn't expect him to be there, had him ranked much higher, and so they figured they had to take him for sheer value. Hope he pays off.

For a 6th round pick, well worth a shot by the sounds of it. Tiny, but skilled and fearless. Obviously playing a style like he does will lead to injuries. But if he gets away from that style, might not be as effective a player.

I had him ranked 27th among OHL players eligible for the draft. Here is what I wrote.

Based on pure skill alone, he's one of the most talented forwards on this list (anywhere in the Top 50). Gavrus has insane puck skill and can make moves at top speed. He scored one of the prettier goals in the league this year against Windsor (the one you guys have above), showcasing just what I was talking about. He keeps plays alive in the offensive end by putting the puck on a string. Just a very dynamic player; one who is very fun to watch. He's also fearless on the ice and despite being undersized, will do just about anything to make a play. In a way, that's the big concern with Gavrus. His durability has to come into question after receiving two concussions this year, one pretty bad one. He has a habit of skating around with his head down and can get too cute with the puck at times. He's a pretty one dimensional player at this point too, and we'll need to round out his game to be an effective NHL'er. Tons of offensive potential if he find a way to survive the physical rigors of the North American game.

Definitely a great pick in the 6th round IMO.

Ooh. Concussion history is bad. It's why I wasn't as high on Frk as a lot of you - I believe he had one or two already too.
