When the Penguins drafted Jagr in 1990, the idea of selecting players from former Soviet bloc nations was still a pretty exotic endeavor. Would he be allowed to come to North America. Could he handle the culture? Could he learn the language. Could he handle the North American game?
Czechoslovakia wasn't in the Soviet bloc. Eastern bloc. Not Soviet.
Cool idea for a group of themed articles. Honestly if I had to pick one game it would be that Game 1 vs. the Blackhawks but that's just me personally. The loudest I think it ever was in there and obviously the shock and excitement were mind-blowing. FYI yes I did think of that game before scrolling down to the goal
He downplays Mario a little bit on that Game 1 goal IMO. Some could call it just taking a chance. Lemieux says as much in the highlight video from that year, but to me it takes brass balls and great anticipation. Realizing Francis + Murphy probably equals a shot from the faceoff, then having the guts to act on it in a situation where you could give up a 2 on 1 (again, Lemieux admits as much) takes a winner.
