The Essentials: Pittsburgh Penguins

I was waiting for Puckdaddy to post the Penguins version of this series! Good read for offseason, particularly this less-than-enthraling offseason.

Simply put, no one has ever meant more to a professional North American sports franchise than Mario Lemieux - on or off the ice.

Haha the end of the article, about the food. They got the Mario Lemeiux buns, Jaromir Jagr peanut butter, Darius Kasparaitis pickles and Fleury Flakes. They forgot Dupuis Dijon!

When the Penguins drafted Jagr in 1990, the idea of selecting players from former Soviet bloc nations was still a pretty exotic endeavor. Would he be allowed to come to North America. Could he handle the culture? Could he learn the language. Could he handle the North American game?
Oh Geography...

Czechoslovakia wasn't in the Soviet bloc. Eastern bloc. Not Soviet.

Great choices across the board. Jagr felt like a weird pick for villain but I don't know who else I would've went with instead.

he's more of a fallen hero than a villain. He's never done enough to actually hurt us to be a true villain. Simply put, he is a jag off.

"You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villian."

Really, for me, Jagr wasn't a villain until he signed with the Flyers, but Tom Barrass*o**! is the true villain.

What a piece of work he is, even as good as he was at times.

Cool idea for a group of themed articles. Honestly if I had to pick one game it would be that Game 1 vs. the Blackhawks but that's just me personally. The loudest I think it ever was in there and obviously the shock and excitement were mind-blowing. FYI yes I did think of that game before scrolling down to the goal

He downplays Mario a little bit on that Game 1 goal IMO. Some could call it just taking a chance. Lemieux says as much in the highlight video from that year, but to me it takes brass balls and great anticipation. Realizing Francis + Murphy probably equals a shot from the faceoff, then having the guts to act on it in a situation where you could give up a 2 on 1 (again, Lemieux admits as much) takes a winner.

While not part of Soviet Union, certainly under strong influence.
