Niklas Bäckström to Toronto

What would it take to get him in a Leafs uniform? I know he's still the #1 goalie for the Wild despite Harding's extension, so what kind of package would entice Fletcher to move him?

I see this thread starting with a few posts from Wild fans politely declining any trade involving Backstrom, followed by a horde of Vancouver fans telling Leaf fans that Luongo is their only option. #justsayin

From what I've read, the Wild want to keep Backstrom for the remainder of his contract (1yr).

Because he's a UFA after this season. Because they signed Harding for the next few years and have Hackett coming in through the system.

Plus they have some holes in the line-up that may not be plugged through free agency.

Rather keep Bäcström for the remaining year so we got a chance to get in playoffs and keep Hackett in AHL as starter. People seem to forget Wild were top team in the NHL before injuries stroked and team fell due to no depth in AHL.

Well Minnesota has no need to trade him, and Toronto is desperate for a goalie.

So anythign you think might work from a Leafs POV probably add 30% to it.

This Stuart Percy must be worth tons, because I can't see them caring for Reimer much.

Minny isnt exactly built to go very far next year. Percy is the most interesting piece from that offer, Reimer might still have potential and that '13 2nd rounder should be top40. All that for a goalie with injury problems thats UFA in 1 year ? thats a solid offer.

They have Harding and apparently 2 other very young goalies. Reimer does nothing for them.

Why not hold onto Backstrom and wait for a team to get desperate?

Percy?

Come on now.

And you're trading him to a team to get a 2nd rounder in return, knowing that your trade makes their team significantly stronger.

See how that makse no sense?

Stuart Percy is a very good defensive prospect and a former first rounder last year. He has the smarts and positioning wherewithal to be very successful in the NHL.

He also played quite well in his stints in the AHL playoffs this year.

Wasn't there news out of Toronto that Burke wasn't interested in Backstrom?

Meh, he's a late 1st rounder who has done nothing so far.

If the Wild are looking to trade Backstrom come January there will be some serious offers for him.

Wrong again. He suffered a significant injury after dominating the start of the year, similar to fifth overall draft pick Morgan Rielly. You'll be very surprised when you see Percy break into the NHL.

Wait til at least the trade deadline before you even think about Backstrom. We need him right now. We're not using Hackett this year, he's gonna spend another year in Houston.

IIRC Chuck Fletcher said that the Harding signing in no way means that he's shopping Backstrom and he wants to have a strong goalie tandem for the '12-'13 season.

Backstrom would be a pretty great fit for the Leafs though.

I think that makes sense as well. Leafs start the season with Reimer/Scrivens. If they flop and Minny is out of playoff picture by then, then Leafs will package some assets to get him. Of course, he'd be a rental by then and won't command as much as he would right now.

Minnesota already said they don't want to trade Backstrom this season.
