Young center iceman with good vision, grit. Seems like a Burke type too: Big, strong, American/Canadian, power forward, went to Boston College.
Because the Preds want Franson back?
I doubt it...

All don't really fit in any more.

We need a 1st line C, elite level play maker, has speed can play D - ( Stastny? )
We need a 3rd line C, size can shut people down with some scoring touch - ( Gaustad? )
We need a 4th line winger, intimidating, big, physical ( Prust?)
Thats a pretty darb good plan. If we add Schultz to our Defense, we are set.

I'm not sure. Maybe if they lose Suter? Ellis is more of a pmd than. I'm really curious who they're discussing though, seems to be someone of significance judging by Henny. Legwand? I still think it's Wilson, he seems to have fallen out of favor from what I've read.

Yes but Lupul isn't part of the list of expendables. At this point nobody could replace Lupul, he had solid chemistry with Phil and a large reason for that was excelling on his off-wing.

I think there is no question our future d corps is looking mighty now... Gunnarson, Gardiner, Rielly, Franson, Blacker, Percy, Finn, Holzer, even Phaneuf is pretty young!

I was commenting on the current 2012 leaf lineup.
Phaneuf/Gunnar
garinder/komi
liles/franson
hozler

The forwards are filling in nicely the d and goaltending are suspect.

Point taken, i think the current defensive unit is mediocre. Goaltending makes me nervous for sure.

I agree man.. Good points.. I think we need another veteran on D as well. Not that much experience back there

Fun Fact: Now that we have JVR he slides into second in career playoff games played (39) on the Leafs. Tied with Lupul and one game behind Liles.

I hope they can bring in a player or two with significant playoff experience to lead the way.

Sorry, wasn't sure where to put this great nugget of information.

Oh, and I definitely think he (JVR) slides into Mac's spot. Mac is gone, and hopefully to the Canucks as the centrepiece of the Luongo deal. Mac+Franson?

I think if Mac and Franson are going to the nucks, its along with a cap dump. Armstrong/Connolly/Lombardi.

Mac and Franson are two good, relatively young pieces. IMO thats a coup for Van, considering the state of their situation.

Why isn't connolly getting a chance at line 1 center? bozak's been GIVEN that position for absolutely no reason. Connolly shows good playmaking skills, but there's only so much he can do playing on the third/fourth line. I think we should give him a fair shot to show us what he can do

right now I see our lines like this

Lupul - Bozak - Kessel
JVR - Grabo - Mac/Frattin/Kadri
Connolly - Steckel - Kulemin (shutdown line suits Kulemin for then Mac)
Brown - Lombardi - Armstrong

assuming there are not other trades

Bozak >>>>>>> Connolly

Every time I start to get excited about the new season I remember that we still have Connolly and it kills the enthusiasm pretty severely.

We clearly need a number one center. We can move guys like Kulemin and MacArthur to do so but will it be enough? unlikely. Was really hoping Ribeiro would come here. Love him or hate him, the guy is a dynamite playmaker amd would easily be our top center and not a bad one at that. I think we snag Luongo soon here but I don't see us getting a top notch center this summer. It's okay though, this team is more deadly up front then I think give it credit for but down the middle there's still a hole and I don't think we have the pieces to get both a great goalie and a great center. If we get Shultz and Luongo it's hard to argue that we don't have a very good roster. We need guys to step up however.

So now that we have JVR........Leafs trade Kessell/Connelly/Army to Colombus for Nash/Umburger.

You could add anyone in those spots: Marlies or low end UFA's

Point being, we need at least that many changes to the roster just to have a shot at the post season. If Burke beleives a Reimer/Scrivens combo is enough to make the post season (especially after last seasons failure) he deserves to be dismissed.

just a thought and you can rip it, if you guys want but what about this possibility:

Lup-JVR-Kess
Kule-Grab-Fratt
Conn-Boz-Kadri
Brown-Steck-Komarov/Army

Gunner-Phan
Gard-Franson (Shultz goes here if signed)
Liles-Holzer/Fran

Reimer
Scriv

Trade Mac and Komi for drafts or that #1 centre of coarse adding Franson,Kadri or Connelly if needed

I like JVR in the middle on line 1

It's inevitable Luongo is a Leaf, seems Burke is going to relax his stance on cap circumvention. He can play hardball and force Vancouver's hand by going after Schneider so if Gillis is wise he will accept a soft deal and move on, otherwise The Leafs can stick it to him if he persists in asking for Gardiner, Kadri, any of our top prospects. He's not driving the bus here, he's driving a rickshaw.

IF Burke can obtain Luongo on the cheap, he'd have to go for it, but a Riemer/Schrivens combo should be much better under a defensive system Coach Randy employs. Still need a #1 centre unless JVR is being slotted in there as rumoured.

I think the deal is a good one for the Leafs, but I do have concerns about JVR being another Ponikarvsky . . . a big guy who is soft-ish in front of the net and in the corners. That being said, he looks like he has way more skill. In the end, I think JVR probably ends up on that second line if he finds chemistry with Grabovski (who doesn't play well with Grabovski, hmm?) and Kulemin slides into his much better suited role on the third line.

And, we have the option to move JVR up or down, based on how he plays and who he plays well with. And finally a winger with some size!

I don't understand the logic here. Why would Schultz want to come to Toronto and not Edmonton where he can have more of an impact behind all those talented young forwards? What is Toronto's supposed attractions? An overabundance of young D-men already? No NHL caliber goalie? Why come to Toronto at all?

It starts and ends with Gardiner's influence.
