Time Travel

Do you think we will ever invent a time traveling machine? If you could use it, would you go into the past or into the future?

Future, if you go backwards you could change time so the time machine wasn't invented and hence doesn't work

time travel would create a complicated problem. If you built a time machine, it is likely because you have something in your past you would like to change.

When you go back into the past and fiz it, you no longer have the problem in the future, meaning you dont create the time machine, by not building a time machine you have that problem and so on.

It would work the same way as using one.

No wait, Doc. The bruise on your head, I know how that happened. You told me the whole story. You were standing on your toilet and you were hanging a clock, and you fell and you hit your head on the sink. And that's when you came up with the idea for the flux capacitor... which is what makes time travel possible.

I already invented the time machine. However, it only goes into the future. One second at a time.

Energy cannot be created nor destroyed... if you believe in that statement, than you must believe time travel is not possible as you would be "destroying" energy from the current time period and "creating" new energy to where ever you end up future/past.

Maybe they have time travel rules?

IE. They have to blend in.

Depends on how the universe actually works.

The whole "destroy the time machine before it is created" problem (the grandfather paradox) is avoided by the many-worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics. For every quantum event ever with non-zero probability, there is a universe.

So you would step into the time machine and reappear in the past in the parallel universe where the "you" killed the other "you" before you had the chance to make build the time machine.

I like these paradoxes.
Another good one is: what if you were given the ultimate secret to the time machine by a mysterious stranger in your youth, and then returned to the past near the end of your life to give the time machine to your younger self? Where did the idea for the time machine come from?

I'm think that the best answer to my own post (which is a Steven Hawking quote) is supposed to be:

The most "believable" form of time machine is a connected traversable wormholes. One wormhole is accelerate to near-light speeds, while the other remains stationary. Because of SR, the wormholes end up connecting two different times - the end that was at high speed had time, and so ends up being "before" the stationary one.

^ The above is why we wouldn't see "tourists from the future". The earliest we could possibly travel back in time to is immediately after the creation of the time machine.

GR is way, way beyond me, but apparently these connected, traversable wormholes are allowed by it [GR].

If I have understood popular physics correctly, travelling forward in time is just a question of travelling fast enough. The time on Earth would pass much faster than on a spaceship travelling at the speed of light.

Travelling backwards in time is probably impossible though.

If it ever was possible for time travel that we see in movies and on tv, I'd hope I'm alive to see it. How cool would it be to be able to go back and live through some of the most important times in human history?

Imagine if education in a time traveling world. "Alright class, make sure you get these permission slips signed so you can go on the trip to 1863. We'll be watching President Lincoln deliver the Emancipation Proclamation, which you should have read about in last night's homework."

I'd definitely go back to the past and relive some wars and important historical time periods. Damn that'd be fun.

EDIT: Kind of funny how as soon as I type this, the Family Guy episode comes on where they go back to Nazi Germany.

Now that you think about it.....there is your solution to making school more hands on. Make a time machine.

It's an entertaining thought to play with but I don't think it will ever happen, no.

I've witnessed time travel.

It was Saturday, I woke up hung over, no memories what so ever what I had done the day before. I went to kitchen for some juice when I noticed an envelope at the kitchen counter. There was 15 euros and a note that said:

"Hey Future Me! You had fun last night and here is 15 euros, order a pizza and have a nice day."

Truth is out there.

If there were time travel, then you could get caught in an infinite loop.

Imagine you fail a test, so you go back in time to tell yourself to study for the test. However, in the process you end up dying. Now, you are caught in an infinite loop as you continuously go back in time and get killed, until you decide not to use time travel.

This is true. Astronauts orbiting in the space station have technically traveled in time in relation to us by fractions of a second.

Hopefully not. Do people not remember what happened when Brian traveled back in time to stop 9/11? Lets not have that happen again.
